Briefs

The five-year guide to Jewish, Christian and secular
holidays for 1964 through 1968 was produced by the Zim
Lines in New York for distribution to travel agents and tour
operators in the U.S.A. and Canada. The calendar, in the form
of a wheel 9 3/4 inches in diameter, gives the dates of 54 holi-
days, 19 of them Jewish. In addition to dates, the wheel
explains the event commemorated and describes the nature
of the observance. Dates alone are given for 26 Protestant,
Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox religious holiday and
for ten secular holidays that are legal holidays in the United
States. The Jewish holiday side, in blue, green and parchment
tan, depicts a Judean merchant ship of the 3rd century and
the cardinal points of the compass superimposed on an
ancient map of the Eastern Mediterranean. The ship was
reproduced from a model in the Haifa Nautical Museum
which was, in turn, built from drawings found on the walls
of catecombs in the Beit Shearim excavations near Haifa. The
other side of the wheel carries a drawing of the Zim Lines'
new flagship, the 23,000 gross ton S/S Shalom against a
sun-burst background of brilliant yellows, orange and pink.
