MISS SUSAN COHEN
Mr. and Mrs. Manuel F. Cohen
of Bethesda, Md., announce the
engagement of their daughter
Susan to Paul D. Borman, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Torn Borman
of Lincolnshire Rd.
Miss Cohen is in her first
year at Columbia University
Law School. She attended the
Ecole Internationale in Geneva
and graduated from Smith Col-
lege in 1963.
Some 40,000 Wayne County
women volunteers will join
200,000 Michigan women and
two million women across the
U. S. Tuesday evening for the
annual Mothers' March, high-
light event of the 26th annual
March of Dimes.
These Marching Mothers
(along with some men and
teens assisting the mothers) led
by Mrs. Anne Campbell Stark
and Mrs. Sanford Jackson, co-
chairmen, will brave the cold
to ask the public's financial aid.
The March of Dimes fi-
nances '70 treatment centers,
including the . University of
Michigan Birth Defects Cen-
ter, and research in the more
advanced methods for victims
of birth defects, arthritis and
polio, as well as support to
the new Salk Institute for
Biological Studies.
The National Foundation-
March of Dimes began in 1958
to attack the long-neglected
problem of birth defects in hun-
dreds of disabling forms. Medi-
cal authorities recognized that
the many forms of birth defects
overshadow all other child dis-
abilities. Every year more than
a quarter of a million babies
survive despite significant de-
fects.
Her fiance is a graduate of
the University of Michigan Law
School. He was employed as a
staff attorney by the U.S. Com-
mission on Civil Rights until the
Education makes a people

MARMALADE CAKE
'3/4 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
1 tablespoon grated orange rind
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup orange marmalade
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
11/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 /2 cup skim evaporated milk
1 /2 cup orange juice
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate bits
Cream the shortening, sugar, eggs,
orange rind, and vanilla until light
and fluffy. Stir in the marmalade.
Sift together the flour, baking soda,
and salt. Add to the batter al-
ternately, first with the undiluted
milk, and then with the orange
juice. Stir only enough to blend.
Fold in the chocolate bits. Grease
and flour a 9x13x2 inch pan, and
pour in the batter. Bake at 350
degs. F. until a cake tester inserted
in the center comes out dry, and
the surface is nicely browned, from
50 to 60 minutes. Cool in the pan
for 10 minutes, then remove from
the pan and coal on a rack. If
desired this cake may be frosted
with a plain chocolate or orange
icing.
TOMATO SOUP CAKE
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
11/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 cups sifted cake flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 /1 teaspoon baking soda
1 /2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 /2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 /2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 101/2 oz. can condensed tomato
soup
1 cup nutmeats, chopped medium
fine
1 cup seedless raisins
Cream the shortening, sugar, and
eggs until light and fluffy. Sift
together the flour, baking powder,
baking soda, and spices. Add to the
batter alternately with the soup.
Beat only until blended. Stir in
the nutmeats and raisins. Pour the
batter into a 9x13x2 inch pan which
has been greased and lined with
waxed paper. Bake at 350 degs. F.
about 50 minutes, until the top is
nicely browned and a cake tester
inserted into the center comes out
dry. Cool in the pan for 10 min-
utes, then invert on a rack and
remove the waxed paper at once.
Cool completely. If the cake is not
to be eaten within a few hours,
frost with a plain white icing. If
it is to be served the same day
frost with an icing made of one
3-ounce package of cream cheese,
1 /2 teaspoon vanilla, 2 1/2 cups of
sifted confectioners' sugar, and
about 2 teaspoons of milk. Use just
enough milk to make the frosting
of spreading consistency. This frost-
ing does not keep well.
