and Kennedy, all asked for a
revision of the present stat-
utes. President Truman said
present law was that "citizens
of English or Irish origin
were better Americans than
those with Italian, Greek or
Polish names." Such a con-
cept "is utterly unworthy of
our traditions and ideals,"
President Johnson declared.

discrepancies between the
supply and demand of immi-
grant visas under the present
law — Britain has a quota of

President urged members of
the Congressional committees
to act on the new bill under the
golden rule to "do unto others
as we would have them do unto
us." The President stressed that
the new bill, when enacted,
would serve the national in-
terest.
Among the organizations at-
tending the White House con-
ference were the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee, represented by
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The Edward M. M. Warburg and
expectation that the Soviet
Union would permit many So-
viet Jews to emigrate to Israel
for purposes of reunification
with their families in this coun-
try was voiced by Prime Min-
ister Levi Eshkol.
The premier referred to
Russian Jewry when he ad-
dressed a dinner given by the
Jerusalem Labor Council in
honor of Mr. and Mrs. Ed-
ward Mitchell of Los Angeles,
who received tributes for
their philanthropies.
"We may expect to see the
day," said Eshkol, "when the
Soviet Union will recognize the
strivings of the Jewish people
for national existence in its
own country and enable thou-
sands — tens of thousands — to
join families and friends here."
The Mitchells were honored
specifically for contributing the
Edward and Anna Mitchell Au-
ditorium, which was opened at
the headquarters here of Hista-
drut, the Israel Federation of
Labor.
They have also contributed
funds for the construction of a
school building in Jerusalem
for working youth. Prior to the
dinner, they were received by
President Zalman Shazar and
Minister of Finance Sapir.

WASHINGTON — The hope
that the majority of the mem-
bers of Congress would support
the bill to amend the present
immigration law was expressed
Monday by President Johnson
in a meeting attended by mem-
bers of Congressional commit-
tees dealing with the bill and
representatives of 36 American
organizations interested in im-
migration problems.
The bill would gradually
abolish the present national
origins quota system and replace
it by objective criteria concern-
ing the qualifications of the
immigrant.
President Johnson, addressing
the meeting, described the new
criteria as "full of common
sense, common decency, which
operate for the common good."
The President pointed out
that his predecessors, Pres-
idents Truman, Eisenhower

Soviet Jewish General
Loses Red Army Post

(Continued from Page 1)
Hero of the Soviet Union, was
the last of a number of Jewish
officers holding senior rank in
the Red Army. The reports
stated that he has been replaced
by another officer, but it is not
known whether he has been as-
signed to another post.
Soviet authorities have fre-
quently cited Gen. Kreyser in
the past as "proof" that there
was no official anti-Semitism in
the USSR. Two years ago, an-
other Soviet Jewish officer,
Gen. Dragounsky, said here that
Gen. Kreyser, while "not an or-
thodox Jew." was "a traditional-
ly-minded Jew who tries when-
ever possible to attend religious
services during the High Holy
Days." Gen. Dragounsky also
revealed that Gen. Kreyser's
daughter had married a Jew and
that her children were being
brought up in accordance with
Jewish traditions.
