HEF BOY-AR-DEED

Literary Brilliance Evident in
Anna Langfus' Novel 'Lost Shore'

When she was 15, in 1935,
Anna Langfus, a native of Lub-
lin, Poland, had already enter-
ed the literary field and some
of her writings were published
at that time. She was married at
17, went to Belgium with her
husband to pursue their studies,
were caught in Poland while on
a holiday trip there during the
war, her husband and her par-
ents were killed, and she man-
aged in 1941 •to join the resist-
ance forces.
Arrested several times, taken
by the Gestapo to the Plock
political prison, she experienced
the horrors of the war until
her liberation. She has been
living in France since 1946, and
her novel "The Whole Land
Brimstone," written in French,
related her experiences and
dealt with the travails that were
involved in refugee escapes.
Her newest novel, "The Lost
Shore," just published by Pan-
theon Books (22 E. 51st, NY22),
translated from the French by
Peter Wiles, is equally power-
ful. It is a remarkable account,

written in the first person by a
young girl who is referred to
as Maria, of recollections of a
nightmarish past, by two who
had experienced the tragedies
of war. Maria meets an old man.
She finds companionship with
him. The story is about her and
Michel Caron.
They travel together, they
learn to love each other, be-
cause she is so helpless she
needs his care, and he, in turn,
needs her—until the approach
of the time when he becomes
ill and apparently had sent for
his wife, necessitating Maria's
leaving.
When they speak of the past
they recall the war and the re-
sistance, the ghetto and their
sufferings. He relates that he
had bee nin Warsaw. She tells
about having been with the
guerillas of the National Army,
after he relates that in 1943 he
was with the Resistance.
"The Lost Shore" is a deeply
moving story, revealing brilli-
ance in the author's descriptive
powers, attesting to noteworthy
literary skill.
