Cl Dr. Israel Chodos, rabbi of Sinai Temple, Beverly Hills, Calif., oldest Conservative cong- regation in the southwest, died at the age of 58, after an ill- ness that com- menced on Nov. 30, 1962, when he col- lapsed in his pulpit. His right leg was amputated and it was believed that he was on the road to Dr. Chodos recovery. Rabbi Chodos had spoken in Detroit several years ago for the Women's Auxiliary of the Jewish National Fund. He was the author of "Count Your Blessings." He had served before coming to California in Worcester, Mass., Indianapolis and Oklahoma City. In his youth Rabbi Chodos was a concert pianist. In No- vember, his son, Gabriel Cho- dos, a concert pianist, was pre- sented in an annual concert by Pontiac Chapter of Hadassah. Abraham Rosenthal Succumbs at Age 78 Abraham G. Rosenthal, De- troit businessman and a local resident all his life, died Jan. 6 at age 78 in Miami Beach. Mr. Rosenthal, of 14491 Rosemary, Oak Park, was the last of 10 brothers and sis- ters. Prior to his retirement three years ago, he was owner of Light o' Day Manufactur- ing Co., a commercial light- ing business, and previously was owner of Detroit Store Fixture Co. and then owner of Wayne Showcase Co. He was a member of Shaarey Zedek S y n a go g u e, Hannah Schloss Old Timers and Knights of Pythias. Mr. Rosenthal is survived by a son, Marvin (Mike) ; t w o daughters, Mrs. Morris (Sandra) Weiss and Mrs. Robert Bick- man; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was father of the late Irwin and Lester Rosenthal. Service will be held 11:30 a.m. today at Kaufman Funeral Chapel. Rabbi W. Plant Dies at Age 44 Rabbi Walter H. Plaut, of Temple Emanuel in Great Neck, N.Y., since 1955, died last Friday at North Shore Hospi- tal, Long Island, after a long illness. He was 44. Born in Germany in 1919, Rabbi Plaut was graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, was ordained at Hebrew Union Col- lege, Cincinnati, in 1947, and from 1950 to 1952 was a re- search student in Bible at the Hebrew University in Jerusa- lem. Last February he became the first Reform Rabbi to receive a certificate from the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis and Psychology for completion of courses for ministers in the psychology of interpersonal re- lations. Rabbi Plaut was the founder and first rabbi of Temple Beth- El at Fargo, N.D. He served with Temple Judah at Cedar Rapids, Ia., before coming to Temple Emanuel of Great Neck in 1955. In 1946 he founded Herzl Camp at Web- ster, Wis., and served as its director until 1953. In June, 1961, Rabbi Plaut joined with other clergymen in the first Freedom Ride which included rabbis. He journeyed by bus from Washington to Tal- lahassee, testing inter-state bus facilities at every stop. Rabbi Plaut served as chair- man of the Jewish Community Council of Great Neck, and was president of the Great Neck Association of Ministers and Rabbis. Rabbi Plaut is survived by his wife, the former Hadassah Yanich of Detroit; three sons, Yehude, Carmi and Joshua; his mother, Mrs. Jonas Plaut of New York and Toronto; a brother, Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut of Toronto.
