Dr. Gustave Weigel, 57, a world-famous Catholic theo- logian. He was known for advocating the plan for adoption by the Ecumenical Council of a state- ment absolving Jews of blame for the crucifixion of Jesus. Father Weigel also called for better relations between the Catholic Church and the Jewish people. He was an adviser to the Vatican's Secretariat for the Promotion of Christian Unity, headed by Augustin Cardinal Bea. During the last session of the Ecumenical Council, he acted as one of the priests who reported to the world press about the debates inside the closed ses- sions of the Council. * * Last July, it was Father Wei- gel who revealed, at the annual meeting of the National Com- munity Relations Advisory Council in Atlantic City, that the first session of the Ecume- nical Council had shunted aside a proposed statement condem- ning anti-Semitism. There were fears, he said, that such a statment might be interpreted by Arab states as a pro-Israel attitude. Mrs. Sarah Fogelman, Communal Leader, Dies NEY YORK, (JTA) - Mrs. Sarah Fogelman, wife of Dr. Lazar Folbelman, editor-in-chief of the Jewish Daily Forward, died Dec. 31. She was 68. Mrs. Fogelman emigrated to this country 40 years ago with her husband from Russia. She was an active member of the Pioneer Women and other Jew- ish organizations, and was a member of the executive board of the Gold Star Mothers of America. Veteran Zionist Leader Is Dead in Argentina BUENOS AIRES (JTA)-Jos- eph Lutsky, prominent Jewish educator and veteran Argentine Zionist leader, died here at the age of 76. Born in the Ukraine, Lutsky came to Argentina in 1908 and was for many years a Hebrew teacher and active in the Gen- eral Zionist movement. Between 1920 and 1941 he published a weekly Yiddish journal. He was a founding member of the DAIA, the rep- resentative organization of Ar- gentine Jewry, and served for several years as secretary of the United Israel Appeal. Rabbi Gross Dies at 78 BRENTWOOD, Cal. (JTA)- Rabbi Louis D. Gross, founder and publisher of the Jewish Examiner, a weekly newspaper published in Brooklyn, N. Y., until 1956, died here Jan. 1 at the age of 78. He had also served as spiritual leader of Union Temple in Brooklyn. The Jewish Examiner was merged with the American Hebrew eight years ago. It is known as the American Examiner. Born in Chicago, Rabbi Gross was graduated from Hebrew Union College and the Univer- sity of Cincinnati. Bob Leslie Is Dead; Burns Fatal to Actor Detroit television performer Robert M. Leslie died Sunday of burns suffered in a water heater explosion two days be- fore. He died in Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital. Mr. Leslie, 45, was for many years an announcer and actor on radio station WWJ. Later he appeared on children's televis- ion programs. A graduate of the United He- brew Schools, he made many appearances in behalf of the Allied Jewish Campaign and the UFIS, and he assisted in a number of programs for the Hebrew schools. He is survived by a niece, Jane Levy; nephews. Allan and John Levy; sister-in-law, Mrs. Henry Sills; cousins, Abner C. Rosenzweig and Harold C. Berg. The Term 'Hebrew' By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX (Copyright, 1964, JTA, Inc.) The name "Hebrew" as a char- acterization of the people of Israel is generally used in the Bible when referring to the people of Israel among or in contrast to other peoples. It therefore infers that they are different or strangers to other peoples. The most plausible derivation (and there are many offered) is that the word stems from a Hebrew root meaning "to cross" and infers "Ever," meaning a country which is "across" or on the other side. The significance of this is that the people of Israel or its an- cestors were originally a people "on the other side" of the Jordan, or as some have put it "on the other side of the Eu- phrates." The rabbis is the Talmudic literature have aptly characterized the situation of Abraham as feeling himself to be one "on side" while all the other people were "on the other side." It is claimed that the "Habiri" referred to in the Tel El Amarna letters (about 14 centuries before the Com- mon Era) refer to a strange people, or a people of strangers. The. Hebrews may have been called by this name because they were considered "strangers" among the nations. In some cases (as in the situa- tion of Jonah) they themselves adopted this term feeling them- selves foreigners among other nations. Issur Danielovich reportedly plans to buy a home adjacent to the Caesarea Golf Course in Israel. He is known by his stage name: Kirk Douglas. 37-THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS—Friday, January 19, 19 64 17-HOUSES FOR SALE
