N.Y. Suburb School
Boards Split on
Display of Creche

NEW YORK PARK, N. Y.,
(JTA) — The Board of Educa-
tion of School District No. 5
here voted approval of the dis-
play of Nativity scenes in pub-
lic schools within its jurisdic-
tion. The resolution was passed
by a 3-2 margin after another
Hyde Park school board, Dis-
trict 2, voted to approve the
removal of a Nativity scene
from a high school in its area.
Denying that the Nativity
scene is a religious symbol,
Stephen P. Smolenski, counsel
for the District 5 Board, said
that the scene "depicts the
greatest historical event in the
last 2,000 years and is a legal
holiday by government procla-
m.ation."

MARCIA AND AVIE, 15-year-
old twin daughters of Jean and
Harry L. Friedman, commander
of the Department of Michigan
Jewish War Veterans, had to
give up their pet last summer,
a German shepherd named
Duke ... It was his first birth-
day and had gotten too big for
a household pet . . . not to
mention the fact that he scared
visitors . . . All four took a ride
to Rochester, Mich and left the
dog at the Leader Dog School
for the Blind . .. As the tears
flowed in waterfall style and
bye byes never seemed to end,
Marcia and Avie signed papers
giving up all rights to Duke
. . . Last week, the Friedman
twins received a diploma given
to Duke by the school and a
photograph with his new owner,
a 25-year-old totally blind young
man who now has a pair of
wonderful eyes to see him
through life.
