Schappes Challenges Han nah Arendt's Book

Hannah Arendt's "Eichmann
in Jerusalem" is the subject of
an examination by Morris U.
Schappes, literary critic, teacher
and editor. Titled "The Strange
World of Hannah Arendt," his
critique appears in a 32-page
pamphlet reprint of articles pub-

lished by Jewish Currents.
Schappes challenges Dr. Ar-
endt's attack on the prosecution,
defense and court in the Eich-
man trial. ("She sees Israel not
as the instrument of justice but
as the opponent, the very tra-
ducer of justice.") He examines
her depiction of Eichmann as a
misunderstood man, and her
false focus on Jewish collabora-
tion, Jewish passivity, Jewish
resistance he notes her frequent
misrepresentation of verifiable
facts and distorted interpreta-
tions of other facts He compares
the book with the "New Yorker"
articles and notes some of the
significant changes she has
made. He concludes that the
book is "destructive, mischie-
vous and pernicious" and "can
in no way help us free ourselves
of the illusions that neo-Nazis
are spreading today."
Schappes writes: "T hough
(Dr. Arendt) is herself subjec-
tively deeply anti-Nazi, her book
confuses issues and makes it
harder to make the world Na-
zirein. She who is so given to
intellectual paradox, to turning
things inside out, to 'proving'
that Eichrnan is no monster and
no anti-Semite, might well re-
flect how she betrayed her own
intentions, how she outsmarted
herself, how she wrote a book
it would be charitable to hope
she will live to regret—and to
live down."

Dave Matlin, a member of the
U.S. Committee Sports for Is-
rael and the National Health
and Physical Education Com-
mittee of the Jewish Welfare
Board, has been elected second
vice-president of the Amateur
Athletic Union.

By HAROLD J. GOODMAN
Gamal Abdel Nasser and Levi
Eshkol embraced warmly. It
happened at the Gaza Strip, on
a gently sloping hill.
Nasser was the first to speak.
He said, "I come because I
dreamed a dream." "I, too,
come because I dreamed a
dream," said Eshkol.
"In my dream, behold," said
Nasser, "I stood upon the brink
of the Nile; and behold, there
came out of the river seven
mushrooms, huge, awe inspir-
ing; and the stems of the mush-
roomh were like mighty col-
umns, and the heads were like
huge clouds, billowing smoke
and fire. The mushrooms rose,
and spread, and winds were
blowing fiercely. And I saw
in my dream, seven lotus flow-
ers come out of the river; and
the stalks of the lotus were
miles high, and the flowers were
white, and the leaves were miles
across; and the mushrooms and
lotus were in fierce battle,
fighting for supremacy. And
there I stood, by the bank of
the Nile, beholding this won-
drous spectacle, pondering the
meaning of it."
"In my dream," said Eshkol,
"I stoods at the foot of Mt.
Carmel. And, behold, seven
bridges came into view; and the
bridges connected all the lands
of the Arab world with the
land of Israel; and the bridges
were majestic, and the lands of
Islam and the land of Israel
were as one. And, behold, seven
ladders rose into the sky, one
from the center of each bridge,
and they reached to heaven.
And, the angles of God were
ascending and descending. And
I stood there, pondering the
meaning of it."
"And my dream is more,"
said Nasser. "As I stood there,
in wonder and in awe, behold,
there was a crash of thunder
and a flash of lightning, and
the prophet Mohammed stood
beside me, and said: 'I am the
prophet Mohammed, apostle of
Allah, The Lord hath sent me,
and I. am come to declare your
dream, to interpret the mean-
ing of it. The number seven
are the seven lands of Islam.
The mushorrms stand for the
power and wrath of Allah and
speak of the evil that consumes
the peoples of Islam, of the
hatred between brother and
brother, of the enmity toward
your neighbor, Israel. And the
flower of the lotus is the love
of God, the love of brothers
the love of your neighbor, Is-
rael, that Allah enjoins upon
thee; the dream is one. And
Mohammed said unto me, in
the name of Allah, love your
brothers, make peace with
them; and go thee forth to the
land of Israel, to the border of
it.' And there, behold, at the
Strip of Gaza, there is a gently
sloping hill; go thee to the top
of this hill, and there thou
shalt embrace your neighbor,
the ruler of the land of Israel,
and say unto him: I bring thee
peace, my brother. Thus spake
Mohammed unto me, and he
said: Go thee now and do as
the Lord commandeth, lest the
wrath of Allah descend upon
thee, and ye perish from the
earch; and if thou doeth the
will of the Lord, his counten -
ance shall shine upon thee, and
ye shall live for evermore.'
"And my dream, too, is
more," said Esh'rol. "As I stood
there, in wonder and in awe,
behold, there was a flash of
fire, and there was great light
in the firmament of the heaven,
and it was as if the presence
of God was there. And, behold,
Moses stood beside me, and

years of plenty. And all the
people were as brothers, and
the spirit of God pervaded all
the lands.
And the word spread to the
whole world, that peace and
brotherhood were in the land
of Islam and the land of Israel.
And rulers and kings descended
on these lands to behold the
miracle of it and to find the
secret of it. And Gamal Abdel
Nasser and Levi Eskhol spoke
to them, and have them the
secret of it, and they said unto
them: "God is one; All men are
one."

said: the Lord, the God of your
fathers, the God of Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob, hath sent me
unto you; I am come to inter-
pret your dream, to declare the
meaning of it. The number
seven are the seven lands of
Islam; the bridges are bonds of
peace and friendship; the lad-
ders are the blessings of God
and the beneficence of the
Lord. And he said, the Lord,
who has once brought thee out
of the affliction of Egypt, now
commands thee to return to the
land of Egypt, and offer the
hand of friendship and make
peace with the lands of Islam."
And when the telling of the
dreams was ended, Gamal Abdel
Nasser and Levi Eshkol em-
braced with deep feeling, and
Nasser was the first to speak,
and he said, "My dream and
your dream are one; the voice
of your God and my God are
one." And Levi Eshkol spoke,
and he said, "the dreams are
one; the will of my God and
your God is one."
And so it came to pass, in
the days and years ahead, that
peace reigned in . the land of
Israel and the lands of Islam.
And war was no more. And the
face of the land was filled with
fruitage. And the years were
