Court has given permission to

Metropolitan N.Y.

The establishment of the New
York Metropolitan Council of
Orthodox Synagogues by the
Union of Orthodox Jewish Con-
gregations of America has been
announced by Moses I. Feuer-
stein. president of the UOJCA,
the national organization of
3,100 synagogues throughout
the United States and Canada.
The Council, Feuerstein said,
will serve as coordinate and aid
the activities of orthodox Jew-
ish bodies in the Greater New
York area and will eventually
set up local councils in various
parts of the city and suburbs.
The first such unit is the Mid-
Manhattan Council of Ortho-
dox Synagogues, which has
been formed through the initi-
ative of rabbis and lay leaders
in that area.
Max Stern, New York indus-
trialist and communal leader, is
president pro tern of both the
Metropolitan and Mid-Manhat-
tan Councils. Rabbi Norman M.
Bernhard has been appointed
director of the Councils.
