This map indicates the itinerary the Pope is expected to
follow, starting with his departure from Rome tomorrow for
a visit to the Holy Places. From Amman he is to motorcar
to Jerusalem with a stop en route at the River Jordan where,
according to Christian tradition, St. John baptized Jesus. He
will visit Nazareth and Tiberius in Israel, Sunday, returning to
Jerusalem that night for a visit in Bethlehem, before his
return trip home.

Shazar Hopes Popes Visit
Will Herald Peace for M.E.

TEL AVIV (JTA)—An Ital-
ian naval transport unloaded at
Haifa tons of special television
equipment to be used for cover-
age of Pope Paul's visit to Israel
on Sunday.
RAI, the Italian Television
Network, which has been given
the exclusive coverage rights by
the Vatican, will relay televi-
sion broadcasts to al European
stations and the United States
via Testar.
Some 700 reporters and cam-
eramen are expected in Israel
for the Pope's one-day visit
which will include six hours of
motor travel and five hours of
visits, including a mass at the
Church of the Annunciation in
Nazareth and lunch at the
Mount of Beatitude Monastery.
The official Israeli recep-
tion, at Megiddo, will have
President Shazar, Premier
Eshkol, Deputy Premier Abba
Eban and Mrs. Golda Meir,
Israel's Foreign Minister,
welcoming the Pontiff. A pla-
toon of Israeli cadets will
salute the Pontiff as buglars
herald his arrival at Megiddo.
President Shazar will greet
the Pope in Hebrew and hand
him a special medallion in-
scribed "Terra Sancta." At the
border crossing, a collective list
of the Pope's entourage will be
endorsed with an Israeli entry
stamp. The Pope and his Cardi-

nals will remain in cars driven
by clergymen while correspon-
dents and other persons in the
convoy will transfer to Israeli
busses and proceed to tour Naz-
areth, Lake Tiberias and various
churches en route to Mount
Zion in new Jerusalem.
A similar but much briefer
ceremony will be held in new
Jerusalem before the Pope
crosses the Mandelbaum gate
on his return to Jordan-held old
Jerusalem.
Israel has spent more than
$300,000 in preparation for the
visit, including placement of tel-
ephone, telegraph, telex and
broadcasting stations along the
route.
The Interior Ministry pre-
pared a regulation recogniz-
ing Megiddo as the official
frontier crossing point for the
visit, thus eliminating any
question as to where the Pope
would enter Israel from Jor-
dan.
ROME, (JTA)—Astorre May-
er, president of the Jewish
Community of Milan, who is
also president of the Standing
Conference of European Jewish
Community Services — repre-
sentative body of Jewish com-
munities on the European con-
tinent—will greet Pope Paul VI
in Israel, when the Pontiff en-
ters Israel at the Jordanian bor-
der, near Megiddo, Jan. 5.
Mayer is going to Israel espe-
cially to greet the Pope on be-
half of Italian Jewry. At the
welcoming ceremonies at the Is-
raeli side of the border with
Jordan, Mayer will be accom-
panied by Maurice Fisher, Is-
rael's Ambassador to Rome.
Pope Paul asked the diplo-
mats "to use, if necessary,
their influence, and that of
their governments, to main-
tain the pilgrimage in its
purely spiritual light" and to
prevent false interpretations.
"God is our witness," he
stated, "that we have before
our eyes only the good of the
great human family when we
go to those venerable places"
in the Holy Land.
