REHOVOTH, Israel. — Forty- six Kennedy Fellowships, one for each year of the late Presi- dent John F. Kennedy's life, are to be established at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. The people of Israel itself are expected to provide nine of them. They will serve as a "Living Memorial" to the late American . President's intense interest in the furtherance of scientific knowledge for peaceful pur- poses. The President of the State of Israel, Zalman Shazar, has con- sented to be honorary president of the Israeli committee for the Kennedy "Living Memorial" project. The Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Weizman Institute, Abba Eban, has ac- cepted the chairmanship. The first official meeting of the Israeli committee will be held in February. This announcement was made by Meyer W. Weisgal, chairman of the Institute's Executive Council, on his return from the U.S.A. for a brief business so- journ in Israel. The late President Kennedy —in an unprecedented gesture —had agreed to be guest of honour, and sole speaker, at the 18th annual Weizmann dinner, which was to be held by the American Committee for the ordained, Rabbi Adler later was invited to serve as visiting pro- fessor of homiletics at the Sem- inary. Prior to his association with Congregation Shaarey Zedek, in 1938, he served as Rabbi of Tem- ple Emanu-El, Buffalo, N. Y. During the Second World War, while on leave of absence from Congregation Shaarey Zedek, he was assigned to service in the Southwest Pacific. Later, he was the first Jewish chaplain to land in Japan: Rabbi Adler was one of the organizers, taught classes . and served as chairman for a num- ber of years at the Synagogue Adult Institute, the adult Jew- ish education project of Con- servative synagogues of Detroit. In addition to teaching cur- rently at the Shaarey Zedek School for , Adult Jewish Stud- ies, Rabbi Adler serves as na- tional chairman of the Bnai Brith Commission on Adult Jewish Education, and as an advisor for the Wayne State University Department of Near Eastern Languages and Litera- tures. Rabbi Adler had a prominent role in developing the philoso- phy underlying the organization and activities of the Jewish Community Council of Metro- politan Detroit. In addition to having served as the first chair- man of the Council's culture commission, he has also occu- pied the position of vice-presi- dent, and is currently board member of this coordinating body composed of 340 Jewish member organizations. Rabbi Adler has aided the Israel Bond drives here and was instrumental in enrolling labor cooperation in behalf of invest- ments in Israel. Rabbi Adler's articles have been published in leading Jew- ish periodicals. He is the author of "Selected Passages From The Torah". His recent book, "The World Of The Talmud", has been re-issued as a paper- back. His article, "What Is A Jew?" appears in the January issue of Harpers Magazine. Rabbi Adler was a former president of the Zionist Organ- ization of Detroit, and former chairman of the law committee of the Rabbinical Assembly of America. He currently serves as chairman of the Rabbinical Council of the United Jewish Appeal and is on the board of the Jewish Welfare Federtion.
