Jacob Chicorel, of 21830 Bev- erly, Oak Park, for many years a leader in the Sephardic Jewish community of Detroit, died last Saturday at the age of 69. Funeral services were held Sunday at Kaufman Chapel. Surviving him are his wife, Judith; sons, Max, Albert, David and Ralph; daughter s, Mrs. Esther Sibrack and Mrs. 'Shirley Behar; a brother, Salvatore Cicurel, and 13 grandchildren. Mr. Chicorel came from an old family of Jews who are descend- ed from the Spanish Jewish com• munities before 'the Inquisition. Many of them had lived in Tur- key. Mr. Chicorel was born April 17, 1894, in Smyrna, Turkey. His father died when he was a year old and Jacob Chicorel had to leave school after Bar Mitzvah to support his mother, Sazbona Aa- ditti Cicurel. His father was attorney gen- eral of Urla, Turkey. An uncle, Rafael Cicurel, was' chief of po- lice of Urla. Mr. Chicorel's wife, Judith Louza, who was born in Smyrna in 1898, is a first cousin of Mme. Pierre Mendes-France, the wife of the former Prime Minister of France. Jacob Chicorel spoke seven languages, Spanish, Greek, Turk- ish, Ladino, Italian, French and English. Coming to the United States in 1916 from Turkey, to join his brother Haim in Detroit, Mr. Chicorel quickly learned English, became active among the Seph- ardic Jews, began to conduct High Holiday services in his home for the Spanish Jewish ocmmunity he organized and for 47 years was the spiritual leader and cantor of the group. He be- came nationally prominent in Spanish Jewish circles. He was active for a number of years in the Jewish Community Council and was a life member of Pusgah Lodge of Bani Brith. Mr. Chicorel suffered his first heart attack in 1956 while in downtown Detroit trying to find employment for an immigrant. Mr. Chicorel acted as the re- ligious leader, cantor and presi- dent of the Sephardic Spanish- Jewish Community of Detroit and was a leader in the move- ment recently inaugurated to build a permanent structure for this synagogue. He was a member of Bnai Brith and other local Jewish movements. He became known in the non- Jewish community as the owner of the Detroit Time cafeteria from 1927 to 1942 when he es- tablished the Kenwood Lounge at Fenkell and Telegraph Road which he operated with his sons. He was active in the Allied Jewish Campaign, took a deep interest in the Zionist move- ment and shared in efforts for the Mar Silver project in Israel and the Balfour Concerts of the Zionist Organization of Detroit. He lived in Detroit for 43 years. He was a member of Moslem Temple, Crescent Shrine, Shaarey Zedek, Jewish Congress and Bnai Brith. Mrs. Elie Kazan Dies Mrs. Elie (Molly) Kazan, wife of the noted literary critic and stage producer, died Saturday at the age of 56 of a cerebral hemorrhage. Married 31 years, they had four children. Detroit scrap dealer Claude Superstine, 23531 Marlow, Oak Park, died Dec. 16. He was 64. Mr. Superstine was born in Russia and came to Detroit 42 years ago. He was a member of a number of Jewish communal groups, including Yeshivath Beth Yehudah, Young Israel of Oak-Woods, the Hebrew Benev- olent Society and Friends of Bar-Ilan University. Surviving Mr. Superstine are his wife, Dinah; sons, Edward of Jerusalem, Israel (former Wayne State University faculty member and now head of the pharmaceutical department at Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center), and Dr. Milton; daughter, Mrs. Ernest Klein; brother, Joseph of Montreal; sister, Mrs. Morris Gellman; and seven grandchildren. Chaim Wiener, Labor Zionist, Dies in Israel Chaim Wiener, for more than 50 years a resident of Detroit, who was one of the pioneer Labor Zionist leaders, died in Tel Aviv Nov. 29.
