Literary Gems from Schech,ter's
Writings in Mandelbaum Brochure

Burning Bush Press (1109
5th, NY28) has issued a 132-
page issue of "'The Wisdom of
Solomon Schechter," by Rabbi
Bernard Mandelbaum, as a
United Synagogue jubilee pub-
lication.
Dr. Mandel-
baum, who is
Provost and as-
sociate profes-
sor in homi-
letics at the
Jewish T h e o-
logical S e m
nary, has col-
lected, for in-
clusion in this
brochure.
some of the
most impor-
tant of Dr.
S c hechter's
statements —
on secularism, Dr. Schechter
Talmudic s t u d i e s, Zionism,
theology, Torah and other sub-
jects.
In a lengthy introductory es-
say, Rabbi Mandelbaum evalu-
ates the contributions to Jewish
life by Prof. Schechter and he
writes about the late president
of the Jewish Theological Semi-
n a r y and the Conservative
Jewish leader:
"He saw in America, in the
Conservative Movement, indeed
in us, the 'spirit that renews
the face of things.' In almost
prophetic expression of the
opportunity which faces our
generation, he spoke with real-
ism, faith and hope . . ."
Dr. Schechter is viewed by
Dr. Mandelbaum as "the
great expounder of ideals."
He sees in his life "a mystic
thread of destiny which drew
him to these shores and
bound the fate of Judaism
with that of America."
He quotes from a statement
by Dr. Schechter warning

I i WHY WORRY I !

Leave Everything to Us

against secularism, when he
came from England to this
country in 1902 to become the
Jewish Theological Seminary
president, and he states that he
brought to the task of fighting
the encroaching dangers of
materialism "indomitable cour-
age, a determined will, strength
of character and irreproachable
integrity."
Dr. Mandelbaum has per-
formed a thorough task. of gath-
ering from Dr. Schechter's writ-
ings some of his most note-
worthy literary gems.
