JERUSALEM, ( JTA) —Thre e thousand members of the Mac- cabi Sports Union enacted the traditional Hanukah "Modiin Torch" ceremony, lighting a torch at the Modiin burial site of the Hasmonean Dynasty, which had given birth to the Maccabean revolt, then carry- ing the torch through Israel. The ceremony, always held on the eve of the Hanukah festival, had been delayed by heavy rain- storms. Israeli Maccabi runners car- ried the torch lighted at Modiin by relays to Ramlel and Reho- vot, where they halted at the grave of the late Dr. Chaim Weizmann, Israel's first Presi- dent. Then other torches, light- ed from the original Modiin flame, were taken to Jerusalem, Haifa, Tel Aviv, Beersheba and Eilat. In each town, the torch was received with ceremonies in which the mayors and local sports organization participated. Brith Sholom Report Favors Group Libel Legislation in U.S. PHILADELPHIA (JTA) — A committee of Brith Sholom has submitted a report approving group libel legislation, I. Irving T u b i s, president, announced. Other major Jewish national or- ganizations oppose such legisla- tion. The committee recommended legislation "to curtail the pub- lishing and distribution of ma- terial that intentionally and ma- liciously defames any racial, re- ligious or ethnic group or which advocates injury to their person or property, or worse, their ex- tinction." Asserting that laws could be written which would "stand the test of constitutionality," the committee denied the stand of foes of such legislation that it would abridge freedom of speech. The committee said that in the most liberal interpreta- tion, "the hateful fabrications disseminated by racists, which seek to rob a particular group of its dignity and/or its life, cannot be equated with legiti- mate speech." There is an outside chance that a team of Russian Jewish athletes will compete in Israel during the summer of 1965. And, if it comes to pass, it will be a historic breakthrough in So- viet Israeli relations. However, the inclination is wait and see if a thaw does develop. The possibility arose during a recent UNESCO meeting in Europe. Pierre Gildesgame, of England, chairman of the Mac- cabi World Union, spoke to a group of Russians at the con- ference and extended an invi- tation for a team of Russian Jewish athletes to participate in the Seventh World Macca- biah Games. The Soviets didn't say yes. But they didn't say no. They told Gildesgame to extend an official inviation through the proper Russiain sports channels, and that's where the matter stands at the moment.
