Leonard Gordon, well known
resort and spa operator, has
been appointed executive man-
ager of the luxurious Lido Spa
located on Belle Isle, Miami
Beach, Fla.
Gordon, a veteran resort-man
who has also included hotel re-
sorts in New York and the
Adirondacks in his career, has
spent the last seven years de-
voting his time to spa opera-
tions besides having traveled
extensively through Europe in
order to study the famed Euro-
pean methods of Spa opera-
tion.
Impressed with the need for
a Spa which accents fun and
resort activities, he has put his
thinking into operation at the
Lido Spa to devise a program
which offers guests full Spa
facilities and resort activities
at the same time.

The story is about children—
all Jewish except Ellen, the cen-
tral figure in the narrative.
Poetically, with a keen appre-
ciation of the sentiments of the
children, their trek away from
the sufferings in Poland and
under Nazism, it depicts the de-
struction, the ill feelings, the
dramatic episodes that accom-
pany the youths.
In a sense, there is heroism
in this tale. The incredulity that
faces the children, their reac-
tions, the cry for admission to
Jerusalem—the apocalyptic and
the realistic sentiments—turn
this into a great drama.

There is one especially dra-
matic chapter, "Fear of Fear,"
relating how Ellen was sewing
the Star of David on her dress.
As a Christian child, she didn't
have to do it, but she felt a
solidarity with the Jewish chil-
dren. Ilse Aichinger describes
this episode, the grandmother's
pleadings:

turns into a most fascinating

ger in a high level literary

Sarni
Cohen, a prominent journalist
here, has been elected a mem-
ber of the Istanbul Municipal
Assembly. A member of the
Republican People's Party of
Premier Ismet Inonu, Cohen,
34, was the only Jew to have
won a seat in the recent local
elections. While all the main
political parties presented at
least one Jewish candidate,
Cohen was the only one elected.

Turkish Authorities
Refuse Permission to
Open Jewish School

ISTANBUL (JTA—A request
by the Jewish community here
for the establishment of a new
Jewish school has been rejected
by the Turkish authorities. The
school was to be located in a
modern section of the city now
inhabited by many Jews. All
the other Jewish schools are in
the older quarters. The reason
for the rejection by the authori-
ties of the Jewish community's
request has not been disclosed.

use Aichinger, who was born
in Vienna in 1921, could not, as
a Jewess, continue her educa-
tion during World War II. She
escaped the horrors of Nazism
but had witnessed the tragedies,
especially those suffered by the
children, and a poetic and very
dramatic result is her great de-
scriptive work, "Herod's Chil-
dren," published by Atheneum
(162 E. 38th, NY 16).
She had planned to continue
her medical studies after the
war, but she interrupted them
to write this significant story.
It was first published in Hol-
land in 1947, appeared in Ger-
many two years later, causing
a sensation there. Now it is
among the gems in the litera-
ture on the Hitler period, in a
fine translation from the Ger-
man by Cornelia Schaeffer.
