Symphony Auditions

Co-winners of the first youth
auditions sponsored by the
South Oakland Symphony So-
ciety are violinist Loraine Mes-
sick of Ferndale and cellist
Carole Schwartz of Huntington
Woods.
The winners will perform
with the Symphony as guest
soloists on Feb. 16. They also
will receive plaques and share
a $100 music scholarship to
Interlochen, or to another
music camp of their choice.
Carole, 16, is a junior at
Royal Oak Dondero High
School. The daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Nathan Schwartz,
25825 York, she is a student of
Paul Olefsky, former first cel-
list with the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra.
Loraine, 17, is a junior at
Detroit's Cass Technical High
School and is a student of
Mischa Mischakoff, concertmas-
ter of the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra. The daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Russell H. Messick,
2330 Goodrich, she is a recent
recipient of the Ford Founda-
tion music scholarship.
Clark Eastham, Royal Oak
composer and teacher, and Gor-
don Staples, concert violinist
and assistant concertmaster of
the Detroit Symphony Orches-
tra, were the audition judges.
