Gerda Charles Increases Her Status
as Novelist with 'Slanting Light'

Gerda Charles is distinguished
among the British-Jewish writ-
ers. Already recognized approv-
ingly for her two earlier novels,
"The Crossing Point" and "The
True Voice," her newest work,
"A Slanting Light,• published
by Knopf, raises her position to
even greater heights.
It is an outstanding work
from the point of view of liter-
ary quality. It may well be call-
ed a faultless piece of writing.
It takes the form of a series
of letters by an Englishwoman,
Ruth Holland, who takes the
position of housekeeper for an
American Jewish playwright
who came to London to produce
his play.
Bernard Zold is the Jewish
hero in this story. While Ruth's
own experiences, her love af-
fairs, her divorce, her separa-
tion from her second husband
to whom she writes the letters,
in themselves create dramatic
elements for a novel, it is the
role of Zold that is vital here.
Here is a man who meets up
with many problems. There is a
domineering mother, a wife who
does not fulfill his craving for
a good family relationship, a
daughter who adds to his prob-
lems.
The frustrations that mark
the American Jew's activities,
the reactions to him of a non-
Jewish housekeeper, the dia-
logues revolving around literary
activities—all add up to an ex-
cellent plot that is not really a

well written.
Gerda Charles' descriptions
of Bernard Zold's genius—the

their appearance in the form of
a novel that reads well and
holds the reader's attentions
throughout.
