OBITUARIES to in J. N. Book Review, Dies at Age 53; Memorialized in Book 'Able' Friends, former classmates and associates in the Hashomer Hatzair movement with Abraham Golan were saddened to learn of his death on Oct. 22 at the age of 53. Golan was referred to in The Jewish News review of "Between Arab and Israeli," by Lt. Gen. E. L. M. Bums (published by Ivan Obolensky). Gen. Burns was severely criticized for his discourteous reference to Golan. The review was published, with- out the reviewer's knowledge, after Golan's death. Abe Golan was affectionately called "Abie," and a Hebrew memorial volume issued by the Ein Hashofet settlement in Israel in tribute to his memory is en- titled "Abie." He was one of the pioneers who established Ein Hashofet where his widow, Zippora, lives with two daughters. Golan is sur- vived by another daughter, who lives in Nir Oz, a young Kibbutz on the Ghana Strip border; a grandson, his mother and a brother. His brother and his family reside in Haifa. Golan's I In Memoriam In memory of beloved hus- band and father, Nathan Tobis- man, who passed away Oct. 15, 1956. Although we are thous- ands of miles apart, you are always in our hearts. Sadly missed by his wife and children, brothers and sisters. * * * In loving memory of the late Stanford Megdall, who passed away two years ago. Sadly miss- ed and always remembered by his wife, children, brothers and sisters. The Family of the Late ARTHUR BENJAMIN mother also resides in Ein Hashofet. The articles in the Ein Hasho- fet volume, "Abie," are deeply moving. In addition to biographi- cal data, there are excerpts from his writings, tributes by his wife, a touching article by his brother Zalman and a specially inter- esting feature by his daughter liana. Yirmiyahu Haggai, former De- troiter who recently returned to Ein Hashofet after a visit here with his mother and sister, calls our attention, in a message from Israel mourning Golan's death, to two books on Ein Hashofet that are based on a diary kept by Abe Golan during the first year of his settlement in Israel with his wife. In "Abie" appears also a trib- ute to Golan by Prof. Harry Or- linsky, noted American Biblical scholar, who was Golan's class- mate at the university in To- ronto. The tributes to Golan in "Abie" show an appreciation for his work, affection for him as a man of high character and as a builder of communal life in Israel.
