Illustrated 'The Heritage of Music' Encompasses
Vast Field of Musical Lore, Notes Singing of Hebrews

Katherine B. Shippen a n d
Anca Seidlova have combined
their skills to produce a highly
informative book on music. In
"The Heritage of Music," pub-
lished by Viking Press (625
Madison, NY22), they have in-
corporated a wealth of infor-
mation about musicians and
their works.

this work brings up to date the
accomplishments in the musical
field.
Tracing the "sounds of na-
ture" to earliest times, the two
authors have this to say about
ancient Hebrew music:

"In Palestine the Hebrews'
great enjoyment was not in
instrumental music, though
they used limbrels,' or lit-
tle drums, to beat out the
rhythm for their singing and
dancing, and they played the

when they felt happy a n d
serene. They also had small
flutes called ‘ugabs,' and blew
the 'shofar,' or ram's horn, to
call the people to repentance.

singing. 'I, even I, will sing
unto the Lord,' Deborah the
prophetess cried, and all the
people joined her in her de-
sire.
"Samuel, the last of the
Judges, built a school of
prophecy and music, and
David, who has been called the
Great Musician, studied there
as a boy. The music of the
Psalms of David has been lost,
but as poems they have been
an inspiration to generations
of men. David, too, is believed
to have conceived the ritual,
with its antiphonal chants,
which was practiced in Solo-
mon's temple nearly a thou-
sand years before Christ. The
ritual is still used in the
Jewish synagogues today."
