Grinnell's Art Gallery Shows Chagall Series of Bible Etchings By ARNOLD LAWRENCE The work of artist Marc Cha- gall is featured at the opening of Grinnell's new art gallery. The collection includes 65 hand-colored etchings from the artist's "Bible Series." The series, which originally included 105 pieces, was 25 years in the making. It is considered one of the most impor- tant works of graphic reli- gious art to be produced in modern Chagall times. All of Chagall's mastery of the graphic technique and sensi- tivity of line, form, color and interpretation are evident in these pieceS. Unlike the famous "Jerusa- lem Windows," the series on exhibit portrays the human figure, which Chagall handles uniquely. Each piece is accom- panied by the biblical quota- tion that inspired it. Chagall proves himself as a true master of the delicate etching within this impressive collection. The work is both powerful and subtle, explosive and yet serene. Each individual piece deserves special attention. Also of considerable interest at the gallery is a volume of dows for - Jerusalem)." This book contains 131 works show- ing the development of the fa- mous windows. The color clar- ity is magnificent and the book should not be missed when viewing the show. All of the work in the book and the show is signed by the artist. The gallery is under the di- rection of Wynn and Loretta Ruff of New York and Miami Beach. Nedzi of Michigan's First District this week joined in expressing shock over the declarations made in this country by Aron Vergelis, editor of Sovietische Heimland, who came here as a member of the Russian cultural delegation. Vergelis followed the Russian line of denying the existence of anti-Semitism in Russia and of many accusations against the United States and the Jews. Rep. Nedzi charged that. Ver- gelis' statements "fell into the category of 'when did you stop beating your wife' utterances." Congressman Nedzi said: "While we, in this country, have a long way to go to com- pletely eradicate the sin of anti-Semitism, I think it is fair to say that government policy is non-discriminatory. Vergeli s' nonrefutation of statistics and other evidence of anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union clearly tags him for what he is — a Soviet propagandist, guise d in the sheep's clothing of an 'intellec- tual' poet."
