prior to the expiration of the
Oct. 1, 1956, deadline set by the
old laws, because they could not
emerge in time from countries
behind the Iron Curtain.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chair-
man of the Conference on Jew-
ish Material Claims Against Ger-
many, had asked for a total of
$1,125,000,000 for these post-
1953 claimants. Of that total,
$750,000,000 would be paid to
the post-1953 group of Nazi vic-
tims in personal restitution,
while the remainder would be
paid in indemnities to those
whose property had been robbed
by the Nazi regime.
The Israel delegation will pro-
test the planned lump-sum allo-
cation and the several other
clauses in the draft amendments
which would discriminate against
the former East European Jews
who found it impossible to es-
cape from countries behind the
Iron Curtain prior to the 1953
cut-off date for restitution ap-
plications. It is estimated that
there are about 100,000 Jews
among such claimants.
Under the amendments as pre-
sented by Dr. Dahlgrun, the
lump sum of $150,000,000 would
cover only those victims of Naz-
ism who were deprived of their
freedom by the Nazis, but would
not include those who were in-
