Churchill Reaffirms Interest in Zionism Stating that he has been in- terested in Zionism for many years, Sir Winston Churchill this week hailed the economic development of the State of Israel, in a letter in which he acknowledged a commendation award by the Los Angeles Com- mittee for Israel Bonds for his lifelong interest in the estab- lishment of the State of Israel. "I have been concerned with the developments of Zionism since their earliest days," Sir Winston said, "and I have viewed with pleasure and ad- miration the maturing of the State of Israel. It is my earnest hope that Israel may prosper and live in peace with her neighbors, to the detriment of none and to the lasting benefit of the Middle East." Commendation A w a r d s for Sir Winston and nine other out- standing personalities were an- nounced at a dinner given this week by the Los Angeles Com- mittee for Israel Bonds. Governor Edmund G. Brown of California, who was a guest at the dinner, termed Israel "a refuge from man's tyranny and a citadel of man's hope." Dress Shop Owner Walter Irving Dies Dress-shop owner Walter W. The general 'view is that R uby, who :changed his name from Jack Ruby Rubinstein, is a highly patriotic man. He was the first to close his night clubs in Dallas in tribute to President Kennedy's memory, and he kept spouting anger against the Com- munists and Oswald. Ruby's brother in Detroit, Earl Ruby, a highly respected De- troiter; his sister, Mrs. Eva Grant in Dallas, his other bro- thers and sisters, are in despair and are being consoled. All raised in a religious Jew- ish home, the brothers and sis- ters are in a quandary that their brother should have been moved to such an extreme act as to take the law in his own hands and not to permit the orderly processes of the law to function against Oswald. But the general feeling is that Ruby put into action the feeling of anger that drove him to mad- ness. He was avenging our Presi- dent's death. That will be his defense: temporary madness and the anger over the murder of our chief executive. Jack Ruby Attended Synagogue Memorial for Kennedy in Dallas DALLAS (JTA) — Jack Ru- benstein, known here as Jack Ruby, the night club operator who is being held by police here for killing Lee Harvey Oswald, the man accused of assassinating President Kennedy, attended special memorial services in honor of Mr. Kennedy, last Fri- day night, at Temple Shearith Israel here, a Conservative syna- gogue, according to Rabbi Hillel Silverman, spiritual leader of the congregation. Rabbi Silver told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that Ruby, a member of Shearith Israel, usually attended services only during the High Holy Days. Mrs. Eva L. Grant, of this city, the man's sister, said that their family, consisting of four boys and four girls, were "a big, Or- thodox Jewish family."
