:Moscow Jewish Editor Says
No Anti-Semitism in. Russia

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Aron
Vergelis, editor of the Sovietish
Heimland published in Moscow,
and Robert Rozhdestvensky, a
prominent Soviet poet, asserted
here with great heat that there
is no anti-Semitism in the So-
viet Union, the latter insisting
"a Jewish problem does not ex-

Dr. Isaacman Will.
Address Conference of
Hebrew-Yiddish Shule

Dr. Daniel Isaacman, registrar
of Gratz College in Philadelphia,
will address the school confer-
ence of the Hayim Greenberg
Hebrew-Yiddish Shule Dec. 12
at the Labor
Zionist Insti-
tute. His topic
will be "Secu-
lar Jewish
Education i n
America To-
day."
He will
speak at the
One g Shab- Dr. Isaacman
bat for the entire Labor Zionist
movement Dec. 13 on "The Cri-
sis of Jewish Education and The
Labor Zionist Approach." The
meetings are open to the public
and there is no charge for ad-
mission.
Dr. Isaacman is assistant pro-
fessor of education and history
at Gratz College. He is national
chairman of the Jewish Educa-
tion Committee, Labor Zionist
Organization in America.

ist in the Soviet Union" and
those in this country who say
so are interested only in "inter-
fering with the relaxation of
tensions" between the United
States and the. USSR.
Vergelis and the Russian poet
were members of a three-man
group of Russians who held a
press conference at the head-
quarters of the Soviet Mission
to the United Nations. Most of
the questions directed at the
group, which was headed by
another well - known Russian
writer, Boris Polovoi, concerned
the situation of the Jews in
the Soviet Union.
Both Vergelis and Rozhdest-
vensky avoided direct answers
in regard to closure of syna-
gogues by Soviet authorities and
denial to the Jews of the Soviet
Union of cultural rights. How-
ever, Vergelis did produce for
the television cameras and other
photographers a large colorful
poster announcing in Russian a
performance by Yiddish artists
and said that there are more
Jewish theatrical performances
in the Soviet Union than there
are in the United States.
Challenged about the high
percentage of Jews given the
death sentence for alleged eco-
nomic crimes in the Soviet
Union, Vergelis said that the
victims were sentenced merely
as criminals and that no anti-
Semitism was involved.

KIAMESHA L A K E, N.Y.,
(JTA)—The convention of the
United Synagogue of America
closed with the adoption of a
resolution urging its 799 Con-
servative congregations "to re-
m e m b e r that simplicity in
funeral practices is the tradi-
tion of the Jewish faith and
that the dignity of the dead
and of the bereaved mourners
dictates the elimination of os-
tentation." It called upon all
United Synagogue Congrega-
tions to "invest the ritual sur-
rounding burial with the respect
which only the simplicity in-
herent in our tradition can in-
voke."
The convention also called
upon United Synagogue regions
to support rabbis declining in-
vitations to officiate at Jewish
ceremonies followed by non-
kosher meals. The resolution
urged on rabbis and congrega-
tions to assert the "primacy
and priority" of the synagogues'
financial, social, cultural and
representational needs on all
levels of Jewish community life.
The 1,600 delegates adopted
a resolution opposing Sunday
closing laws as an intrusion
on religious freedom and wel-
comed legislation passed in
some states exempting per-
sons observing Saturday as
their Sabbath.
They commended President
Kennedy for his "far-reaching
proposals on immigration" urg-
ing the elimination of discrim-
ination based on the quota sys-
tem. They also urged the U.S.
Government to ratify the Geno-
cide Convention adopted by the
United Nations in 1948. In an-
other resolution the delegates
urged Conservative Jews to par
ticipate in the "crucial nation-
wide campaign for full civil
rights and equal opportunity
for Negroes." It was adopted
several days before the Presi-
dent's assassination.
Speaking as a man who "hap-
pens to be an American Negro,"
the Rev. Martin Luther King,
Jr., lashed out at the Soviet
government for its "attempt to
liquidate the Jewish people in
Soviet Russia."
The acknowledged leader
of the current civil rights
movement, Dr. King was pre-
sented with the United Syna-
gogue of America's special
Solomon Schechter award
during centenary Emancipa -
tion Proclamation ceremonies
at the organization's 50th an-
niversary convention.

OCEANFRONT

George Maislen, president of
the United Synagogue, present-
ed Dr. King with the award for
"his role in translating the pro-
phetic vision of Abraham Lin-
coln into a living reality." The
award is named for the founder
of the United Synagogue, who
was himself an ardent Lincoln
admirer. The only previous re-
cipient was Governor Herbert
H. Lehman, who was similarly
honored in 1947.
Dr. King scored "the injust-
ices, the indignities and the
humiliating experiences that the
Jews of Russia are facing to-
day." He said he was express-
ing his concern by serving on
a committee that was trying to
keep the problem of Soviet
Jewry before the conscience of
the nation and the world.

Monument to 300,000
Martyrs of Lublin
Unveiled in Poland

LONDON, (JTA) —A monu-
ment to the 300,000 Jew martyrs
who perished under the Nazis
in the Lubin district of Poland,
was unveiled in Lublin in the
presence of Polish government
officials and leaders of the Jew-
ish community, according to a
Warsaw dispatch. The monu-
ment, a bronze statute, bears
the inscription in Polish and
Yiddish: "I seek my near ones
in every handful of ashes."
A dispatch from Belgrade re-
ported that a detailed history
of the Jewish community in
the Province of Macedonia,
from its earliest beginnings in
Roman times through the period
of the Second World War, when
it was completely wiped out by
the Nazis, has been published
by the Union of Jewish Com-
munities in Yugoslavia. The
author of the work is Alexander
Markowski, a Jewish historian.
The Jewish settlement in
Macedonia increased after the
expulsion of the Jews from
Spain in 1492 and before the
outbreak of World War II to-
taled 8,000 persons. Jews in
the province, who suffered from
program at the beginning of
the war, perished in the Tre-
blinka concentration camp.
