Synagogue Heads Receive Holy Day Awards

Sabbath Service
Monday Evening

The first performance of an
original "Sabbath and Festival
Morning Service" by Dan Froh-
man will be presented at 8:30
p.m. Monday in the sanctuary
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
Appearing as soloists in the
program will be Cantors Louis
Klein of Congregation Bnai
Moshe, Simon Bermanis of Con-
gregation Ahavas Achim and
Jacob H. Sonenklar of Congre-
gation Shaarey Zedek, together
with Frohman. Rebecca Froh-
man will be at the piano.
Frohman's earlier work, an
original "Friday Night Service,"
was presented this spring in De-
troit and in a group of other
cities, including Buffalo, Cleve.
land, Toronto, Pittsburgh and
Los Angeles.
This program is presented
under the auspices of the Men's
Club in conjunction with the
Adult Institute Committee of
Congregation Shaarey Z e d e k.
Open to the public at no charge,
this performance is the convo-
cation of the congregation's
Adult Institute which will meet
for 17 Tuesday evenings from
Dec. 3 to March 31.

Temple Israel Sets
Memorial Service for
Composer Helfman

Temple Israel will present a
memorial tribute to Max Helf-
man at Sabbath eve services to-
day.
Mr. Helfman, who died last
summer at 64, was teacher of
Sacred Music at the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion, and dean of the
School of Fine Arts at the Uni-
versity of Judaism in Los An-
geles.
Cantor Orbach of Temple
Israel was a student of Helf-
man, and last June premiered
his new wedding service at the
annual convention of the Ameri-
can Conference of Cantors.
At the memorial service, high-
lights of Helfman's two major
synagogue works, "The Holy
Ark" and "The Holy Sabbath,"
will be rendered.

Dr. Isaac Isaacman Will Address Conference
of Hayim Greenberg Hebrew-Yiddish Shule

Ben Harold, president of the
Hayim Greenberg Hebrew-Yid-
dish Shule, announces that a
school conference, with Dr.
Daniel Isaacman, registrar of
Gratz College in Philadelphia,
as guest speaker, will take
place Dec. 12 and 13 at the
Labor Zionist Institute.
On Dec. 12 at 8:45 p.m., Dr.
Isaacman will address the P.T.A.
Assembly and will speak on
"Secular Jewish Education in
America Today." On Dec. 13 at
8:45 p.m., at the Oneg Shabbat,
Dr. Isaacman will address the
Labor Zionist Movement. His
topic will be "The Crisis of Jew-
ish Education and the Labor
Zionist Approach." Children of
the school will participate with
Hanukah recitations and light-
ing of the Hanukah candles.
Both assemblies are open to
the public and will be followed
by a social hour. A school board

meeting will take place 8:45
p.m. Tuesday at the Labor
Zionist Institute.

Rabbi Hill to Install
Rabbi Gordon at Young
Israel of Oak-Woods

Rabbi David J. Hill, national
president of the Council of
Young Israel Synagogues, will
be the installing officer at ex-
ercises honoring Rabbi James I.
Gordon, spiritual leader at the
Young Israel Center of Oak
Woods, on Dec. 8 at the syna-
gogue.
Guest speaker will be Rabbi
Israel Miller, of Kingsbridge
Heights Jewish Center of Bronx,
