41,-..,),••■■•• NEW YORK, (JTA) —Maxi- milian Hurwitz, an editor and translator for the World Jewish Congress, died last week at the age of 76. Hurwitz had been with the WJC for the past 20 years, dur- ing which time he edited more than 10 books and 100 pamph- lets, brochures and other publi- cations. He was skilled as a translator from French, German, Yiddish and Hebrew. Scrap Firm Founder Israel Silverman Dies Israel Silverman, who founded the Silverman & Sons scrap iron firm 30 years go, died Nov. 15. He was 90. Mr. Silverman, 18610 Little- field, was born in Romania and lived in Detroit for 55 years. Surviving are sons, Theodore, Daniel and Max; daughter, Mrs. Max Siporin; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends a r e asked to attend. Dr. Daniel Budson, Pediatrician, Dies Dr. Daniel Budson, 25035 V.er- sallies, Oak Park, died Nov. 19. He was 59. A pediatrician, Dr. Budson was a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School where he taught pediatrics for five years. He had an office in the Fisher Building for 20 years and then opened offices at 10330 W. Seven Mile where he remained for 10 years before retiring in March. Dr. Budson was a staff member of Children's Hospital, Sinai Hospital, Woman's Hospi- tal and Harper Hospital. He was a member of the American Aca- demy of Pediatrics and was a charter member of Temple Israel. Surviving Dr. Budson are his wife, Rose; son, Dr. Richard Budson of B e l m o n t, Mass.; daughters, Mrs. Jack (Barbara) Pechenik and Susan; his mother, Mrs. Vera Budson; brother, Joseph; sisters, Mrs. Rose Solo- mon and Mrs. Florence Stroll; and three grandchildren. Chief Rabbi Toaff Dies in Italy at 83 (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) LEGHORN, Italy — Rabbi Sabato Alfredo T o a f f, Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community of Leghorn and president of the Council of Italian Rabbis, died here Monday at the age of 83. As a sign of mourning, the Jewish community here, one of the oldest in Europe. has closed its offices and all Jewish schools. A native of Leghorn, Rabbi Toaff was actively interested in Jewish history. One of his sur- viving sons is Rabbi Elio Toaff, Chief Rabbi of Rome. Movie Theater Owner Max Allen Dies at 74 Theater owner Max Allen, 19378 Robson, died Nov. 18. He was 74: Mr. Allen was born in Poland and had been a resident of Detroit for 18 years. He was owner of the Lincoln Park Theater, the Vogue Theater in Leamington, Ont., and the Capi- tol Theater in Wallaceburg, Ont. Mr. Allen was a life member of Windsor Lodge, F.&A.M., and was a member of Cong. Adas Shalom and Bnai Brith. He is survived by wife, Ida; brothers, Jack and Marvin; and sisters, Mrs. Abe Medwin and Mrs. Al Becker. Fritz Reiner Dies NEW YORK. (JTA) — Fritz Reiner, one of the world's great- est orchestra conductors, died here of penumonia. The Buda- pest-born Jewish maestro was 74. He received his early formal training in music in Hungary, and came to the United States in 1922. In 1928, he became an American citizen. He joined the Metropolitan Opera in 1948, and stayed for five years. In 1953 he took on the foundering Chicago Symphony, and molded it one of America's finest orchestras. He retired as conductor of the Chicago Symphony last April. He had been a guest conductor with most major orchestras in the United States. Arthur Benjamin Dies Arthur Benjamin, 17206 Hub- bell, died Nov. 17. He was 67. Mr. Benjamin was born in Utica, N. Y., and had been a resident of Detroit for 44 years. Until his retirement five years ago, he was the owner of the Benjamin Furniture and Appli- ance Stores. Mr. Benjamin was a member of the Furniture Club of De- troit and was affiliated with Pisgah Lodge of Bnai Brith. He was a World War I army vet- eran. He is survived by a brother, Louis J., and sisters, Mrs. George C. Leib, Mrs. Jacob Ri- zika and Mrs. Morris Tavrow. Argentine Journalist Isaac Isaacson Dies BUENOS AIRES, (JTA) — Isaac Isaacson, prominent Ar- gentine-Jewish author and jour- nalist, died here at 66. He wrote for the "Yiddishe Zeitung," leading Yiddish daily newspaper, for the past 30 years. He was particularly adept as a translator of works by classical English essayists.
