By DAVID SCHWARTZ (Copyright, 1963, JTA, Inc.) Dr. Joseph Burg, the Israeli cabinet minister who is due here shortly for an Israel Bond tour, recently represented his coun- try at the exercises celebrating the Ivory Coast's independence. In the long drive from the American air field, Dr. Burg being a religious minded Jew, put on his tefillin (phylacteries) in the cab and began reciting his morning prayers. The straps around his hand, the little box on his arms and forehead, puzzled the cab driver and when he saw the lips of Dr. Burg moving—he put two and two together. As soon as the car came into a more settled area, the chauffeur stopped the cab, jumped into a telephone booth and calling the police notified them that he had a passenger who with a secret radio was communicating to the enemy. Fortunately, when Dr. Burg arrived in the city, the police had nothing to do as there was a delegation from the Ivory Coast government waiting to welcome the delegate from Is- rael. A good Jew would agree that the tefillin are really a secret radio, communicating with God. Tefillin comes from Tefilla, meaning prayer, and the first wireless messages were prayers. Old Joke There is an old joke about a good Jew putting on his tefillin in a hospital ward. An Irishman, occupying an adjacent bed was filled with admiration. When some of the Irishman's friends came visiting him, Murphy re- marked on the remarkable Jew: "Every morning he takes his own blood pressure." Boycott and Girlcott Golda Meir is back in this country briefly for some UN debating. When Israel's lady Foreign Minister was in this country last, she gave a recep- tion for the women diplomats associated with the UN. The Arab delegates tried to prevail upon I n d i a's representative, Madame Pandit, Nehru's sister, not to attend the reception of Mrs. Meir, but Madame Pandit refused to yield. She said: "The happiest years of my diplomatic service were those spent in Moscow with Mrs. Meir when she represented Israel in Russia and I was India's envoy." The Arabs are really not very smart in fighting a woman. A boycott maybe all right but a "girlcott" is something e 1 s e. Suppose they had won and kept Nehru's daughter from attend- ing. What then? The Arab tactics recall the story of Egypt's boy- cott of Danny Kaye's pictures. Israel Will Benefit from U.S. Turkey Pact LONDON, (JTA) — The United States has arranged for a complicated four-country bar- ter pact for the sale of Turkish chrome to the United States with the aid of Israel and Po- land. The United States will im- port Turkish chrome and pay for it with farm surplus prod- ucts. The farm products will be supplied to Israel and Po- land. Those two will complete the agreement by sending Tur- key products of equal value under current agreements they have with Turkey. For Israel, the pact amounts to orders for $4,000,000 worth of products with an option for $5,000,000 in sales. Israel will send tires, chemicals, plastics, newsprint and semi-finished products to Turkey. Tuberculosis will remain a problem as long as active TB sufferers remain undetected. Christmas Seal contributions aid the work of finding people who need treatment. "If they do that," said Danny Kaye, "I won't eat halva." The Russians Invented It Morris Margulies, who for a long time was Secretary of the Zionist Organization of America, toured Russia and he is back with the information that there is something after all that the Russians really invented — a story about Rockefeller's Jew- ishness. Everywhere ne went in Russia, speaking to Jews in Moscow, Leningrad and Odessa, he would hear Jews say to him: "It really was not nice for a Jew like Rockefeller to divorce his wife." Margulies said all the Jews were sure that Rockefeller was a Jew. Margulies asked the source of the belief, all an- swered that the Russian paper, Izvestia, had called Rockefeller "a Jewish imperialist." The two leading Russian papers are Izvestia and Pravda. Izvestia means News, and Pravda means truth. There is a current Russian witticism to the effect that there is no Pravda in Izvestia and no Izvestia in Pravda.
