Chodos' Talent Impresses in Pontiac
Chapter Recital for Hadassah

By RICHARD HENDIN

Gabriel Chodos came from
the campus of the University
of Oregon to perform in a
benefit recital for the Pontiac
chapter of Hadassah. He
brought with him the usual
white tie and tails and an un-
usual amount of talent and
pianistic sensitivity for one so
young.
The pianist chose to build
his program, held in Pontiac
Northern High School Tuesday
night, around the romantic
composers of the 19th Century,
with the exception of a work by
Bloch. He opened with a lyri-
cal reading of Schubert's Mo-
ments Musicaux. This is a rich-
ly romantic piece and Chodos
played it with all the expres-
sion at his command.
- The Sonata in F Minor by
Beethoven usually called the
"Apposionata" followed. The
artist performed in a bravura
manner which was powerful
and quite intense.
Following intermission, four
short compositions by Brahms
were offered. These tended to
move away somewhat from the
romantics and the artist's tech-
nique could be better apprais-
ed. He did not disappoint as
his handling of the instrument
was flawless.
Ernest Bloch wrote A Voice
in the Wilderness for cello
and orchestra. He then tran-
scribed it for piano and re-
named it Vision and Prophe-
cies. It is frankly Hebraic as
is his Israel Symphony and
Schelomo. Although not as well
known as the others, Visions
and Prophecies deserves to
stand with them. It is richly
introspective one moment and

clearly resolute the next. Cho-
dos' playing was fervent and
fitted the modern idiom in
which it was composed.
The performance closed with
the playing of two works by
Chopin: Barcarolle and Scherzo
in B minor. The former is a
sunny and enchanting gem
which was treated with humor;
the latter is Chopin in a stormy
and satiric mood and Chodos
tended at times to attack the
keyboard with too much
strength.
