State Hospital gi Romney, Dov Joseph, Max Fisher, David Safran Honors Temple Assist in Elevating Detroit's Israel Bond Sales to New 1963 Record at Impressive Dinner Meeting Israel Sisterhood z One of the country's most distinguished Christians — Gov- ernor George Romney — joined with Israel's Minister of Justice, ti Dov Joseph, in elevating the Israel Bond projects to new O heights, when they spoke, on 0 Nov. 7, at - the Masonic Temple, A at the dinner of the Detroit Israel Bond Organization. • A total of $205,000 in Israel Bonds was sold at the dinner. Conducted under the chair- M manship of Max M. Fisher, with co David Safran assisting during 7-1 the Israel Bond sales period, the r-4 meeting resulted in added sales which are expected before the 0 z end of the year to boost Detroit's 1963 total to more than $1,600,- 000. .- 1:1 In his illuminating address, w Governor Romney told how he had imbibed knowledge of and faith in Israel through his Mormonism and how the Mor- mons had predicted long ago the emergence of the State of Israel. He expressed his delight at being at the dinner, first out of his friendship for Max Fisher, and secondly "because of my admiration for you as a people." He said he had learned much about the United Jewish Appeal and the Israel Bond efforts dur- ing the time he had spent at the dinner with the Jewish leaders ;t and he injected a note of levity 6 P into the proceedings by chiding Fisher for selling bonds without a license and by presenting him publicly with such a license. There was another humorous )te in the Governor's speech yen he said: "If my tax pro- un is not adopted, I may be • to Israel with a suitcase of ds to sell to the Israelis." e Governor told of his ughter's experiences w i t h wish children while at Hamp- on School and he paid tribute to Jewry's idealism. "The children of Israel had the greatest impact on the world," he said. He praised the Jew's "sense of destiny" and said it was fortunate for ,1 ‘ the world that out of this im- pact arose a general respect for God. Reading from his Bible the text of Moses' admonition to Israel, he emphasized the pro- phetic influences of faith upon mankind. Describing the survivalism of the Jews in spite of all perse- cutions, Governor Romney ex- pressed admiration for the man- ner in which Jewry kept alive its faith in the future. He drew parallels between the United States and Israel • and described many matters in which both peoples are alike. He said America needs a new dedication and added that "the most pre- cious heritage is the one that comes from you, teaching us that we are children of one God." He commended Jewish activities for both the United Jewish Appeal and Israel Bonds. Dov Joseph illustrated his address with a reference to an experience he had when he came to sell Israel Bonds in Holland. Conferring with bank- ers, he pointed out to them that in the instance of such a vast Jewish effort Israel is in position to go to Jewish com- munities and ask for loans, whereas other nations have difficulty reaching their na- tionals elsewhere. Joseph pointed to Israel's needs for new currency now that the German reparations have ended. He described the vast town building program in Israel, the continuing migration of Jews from many lands into Israel and he said he foresaw the time when hundreds of thousands of , Jews will leave Russia for Israel. - He also pointed to the need to strengthen Israel's defenses and said that while Israel takes care of that portion of her needs, world Jewry still is expected to aid . in facilitating immigration to Israel and the newcomers' integration in the land. Fisher, in his introductory remarks, spoke of his exper- iences in Israel whence he re- turned last week, ha v in g gone there with the UJA mis- sion. He told of the emergence of new towns and praised the spirit of the people, declar- ing, "we can't let them down." Safran referred to the won- derful record set in Israel Bond sales in Detroit this year, point- ing to 1963 as one of the very years on record. Awards to presidents of syna- gogues were presented by Phil- lip Stollman. There were other awards made at the dinner, giv- ing recognition to Bond pur- chasers. • The musical program at the dinner was given by the Yeme- nite singer Shoshana Damari, who was accompanied by the accordianist, Ami Gilad. Miss Damari was introduced by Mrs. Morris L. Schaver. Mrs. - Sol Slomovitz led in the singing of the national anthems, accompa- nied by Mrs. Sidney Allen. The opening and closing prayers were given by Rabbis Moses Lehrman and Samuel Prero.
