Israel Ambassador
Urges UN to Stem
Soviet Discrimination

ALBANY, N. Y., (JTA) - Is-
rael Ambassador Avraham Har-
man said in a radio-TV inter-
view conducted by Sen. Kenneth
B. Keating, New York Republi-
can, that "speedy examination"
by the United Nations Human
Rights Commission should be
made to stem Soviet anti-
Semitism.
Noting the need for focusing
international opinion on the
Soviet Jewish problem, Harman
said that the Human Rights Com-
mission has drafted a declara-
tion of racial discrimination but
still has to consider the whole
question of religious discrimina-
tion.
The ambassador said "a very
great purpose would be served
by a speedy examination of this
by the Human Rights Commis-
sion and, subsequently, by the
General Assembly."

Agudah Parley Urges
Discreet Action on
Soviet Jewry Issue

GREENFIELD PARK, N.Y.,
(JTA) -Delegates to the 41st
annual convention of the Agu-
dath Israel of America criticiz-
ed "the highly publicized ag-
gressive tactics that various
Jewish organizations have
adopted in recent months re-
garding the situation of the
Jews in Soviet Russia."

The Rev. Morton A. Hill (left), 46, a Roman Catholic
priest, and Rabbi Julius Neumann confer on their fast as a
protest against New York City's alleged failure to crack down
on peddlers of pornographic books and pictures. Father Hill
ended his three days of fast when Mayor Wagner promised a
concerted drive against obscenity and appointed Deputy Mayor
Edward Cavanaugh Jr. as his personal coordinator in the cam-
paign. Rabbi Neumann said he would continue a partial fast
because it extends in purpose beyond his many protests on
pornography.

American Jewish Congress Charges
Krupp Empire Sta nds Against Edict

Ten years after a three-power
treaty requiring break-up of the
Krupp industrial empire, the
powerful German cartel - still
intact-is pressing for formal
release of its obligation to dis-
pose of a billion-mark-a-year
complex of coal mines and steel
plants at Rheinhausen, in the
Ruhr, the American Jewish Con-
gress charged.
In a letter to Secretary of
State Dean Rusk, the Jewish
Congress accused Alfred Krupp,
head of the huge industrial com-
bine, of having "no present in-
tention of fulfilling his commit-
ment under the treaty."

Viennese March
in Memory of
Nazis Victims

VIENNA, (JTA)-More than
4,000 Austrians, including many
leading Austrian personalities
took part in a silent march
from the former site of Gestapo
headquarters to a memorial
stone for the victims of the
Nazi era.
After placing wreaths on the
monument, speakers commem-
orated the burning of syna-
gogues in Austria in 1938 and
declared that the fight against
anti-Semitism must be carried
On without compromise.
Streets and bridges in vari-
ous parts of Lower Austria
were found s m e a r e d with
swastikas in the first instances
of such vandalism in this coun-
try in more than a year. Police
have so far been unable to ap-
prehend the culprits.

Vandals Desecrate

Israel Will Issue

LONDON, (JTA )-P olice are

took place Nov. 2 when vandals
painted a large swastika on the
Torah-reading platform of the
United Synagogue in North Lon-
don after stealing sacred silver
ornaments worth several hun-
dred pounds.

JERUSALEM, (JTA)-Israel's
cabinet authorized the issuance
of a special commemorative
stamp in honor of the late Mrs.
Eleanor Roosevelt. The stamp is
to bear her portrait.
Under a 1952 decision by the
cabinet, no Israeli postage stamp
is allowed to bear a human por-
trait, unless the government
authorizes such depiction by a
special vote. There have been
some exceptions to this rule.

"It is evident that he will
not do so unless he is confront-
ed with forthright demands for
compliance by our own Govern-
ment and by the other signa-
tories," declared Dr. Joachim
Prinz of Newark, N.J., president
of the Congress.
In his letter, the Jewish Con-
gress leader recalled that follow-
ing Alfred Krupp's release from
the Allied prison at Ladsberg,
Germany, in 1953, he was per-
mitted to resume his position
as head of the firm of Krupp
under an agreement entered
into at Mehlem, Germany, with
representatives of the United
States, France and Great Britain.
Dr. Prinz challenged the claim
that the foundry could not be
sold. He cited the sale to one
million small individual German
owners by the West German gov-
ernment of the Preussag Mining
and Coal combine and the more
recent successful public offering
of the Volkswagen enterprises.
The letter noted that sales by
the Rheinhausen works exceed
one billion marks (more than
$200,000,000) annually. Much of
this represents steel and steel
produCts barred under the Itleh-
lem treaty, according to the
letter.
