American Jewish Committee Plans
Lehman Award for Mrs. Ittelson

Sonnabend said the award
has been named after Gover-
nor Lehman since "he em-
bodied, in his life and work,
the highest principles of
statesmanship and an unswerv-
ing dedication to the struggle
for human rights for all. Gov-
ernor Lehman's passion for
social justice has inspired his
more than half-century of
public service and his great
achievements in government,
community leadership, econ-
omic progress and human wel-
fare."
The Lehman Award is in the
form of a three-inch silver
medallion portrait of Governor
Lehman, sculptured in bas-re-
lief. It is the work of Robert
Berks, a young American sculp-
tor whose bust of Chaim Weiz-
mann, first President of Israel,
is displayed in the Knesseth,
Israel's Parliament. Other
notables who have been sub-
jects of Berks' sculpture are
Albert E i n s t e i n, Leonard
Bernstein and Ernest Hem-
