g oseph, Israel Minister of Justice Dr. Dov Joseph T oastmaster lx M. Fisher t, Jewish Welfare Federation We are proud to welcome Israel's dis- tinguished Minister of Justice, Dr. Dov Joseph, whom we salute as the heroic de- fender of Jerusalem. Born in Montreal, Dr. Joseph received his legal training in Canada. As a mere youth he joined the Jewish Legion in World War II. He fell in love with Jerusalem, the city he helped to free as he fought under Gen- eral Allenby and settled in Palestine in 1921. A prominent member of the legal pro- fession, Dr. Joseph became legal advisor to the Jewish Agency under the British Man- date and, together with other top Zionist leaders, he was interned by the British at Latrun in 1946. In 1947, Dov Joseph was appointed by the Provisional Government as Military Governor of Jerusalem. In lauding Dr. Joseph's historic service to Israel in resisting the Arab siege of Jerusalem during the War of Liberation, David Ben-Gurion wrote: "Dov Joseph secured his place in the con- temporary history of our people in the days of the siege of Jerusalem, when the capital was cut off from the rest of the population, shelled and starved. By his organizing skill, his energy and his devotion he saved the city from the danger of starvation and the peril of destruction." After the establishment of the State of Israel, Dr. Joseph become its first Minister of Development. He has served as Minister of Commerce and Industry, Minister of Transportation and Communications and Minister of Supply and Rationing, and is a leading authority on Israel's program of economic development aided by Israel Bonds. He gave inspiration to our commun- ity in 1955 and he comes to us on Thursday, Nov. 7th, to inspire us again in our efforts on behalf of Israel Bonds, as our distin- guished guest at our Historic Tribute Dinner, in the Fountain Room of the Masonic Temple.
