Hebrew University Will Establish Stephen Wise Chair on U.S. Jewry

Other speakers at the lunch-
eon included Dr. Wise's daugh-
ter, Judge Justine Wise Polier
of the Family Court of the
State of New York, Prof. Moshe
Davis, head of the Institute of
Contemporary Jewry at the He-
brew University, and Lionel R.
Bauman, president of the Amer-
ican Friends of the Hebrew
University.
Daniel G. Ross, New York at-
torney and long-time leader of
the American Friends, is chair-
man of the national committee
for the Stephen S. Wise Chair,
and Milton J. Krensky, Chicago
community leader, is co-chair-
man. This committee is raising
$150,000 for the establishment
of the chair.
The purpose of the chair was
defined by David, who stressed
that it will provide accurate
knowledge of American Jewry
in its totality at the Hebrew
University's Institute of Con-
temporary Jewry and to the
world of scholarship.

"It is commonplace that Is-
raelis know far too little of the
history, institutions and aspira-
tions of the American Jewish
community. The realities of
American Jewish life today are
only dimly perceived in Israel.
Through the Stephen S. Wise
Chair, serious scholarship on
American Jewish life will be-
come an integral part of the
curriculum of the Hebrew Uni-
versity," Davis stated.

PARIS, (JTA)—Large Jewish
crowds assembled to celebrate
Simhat Torah in front of the
synagogues of Moscow and
Leningrad, it was reported here
in the influential daily, Le
Monde.
The paper said that in Mos-
cow, 15,000 Jews, a majority
of whom were young people,
sang and danced in front of
the synagogue. The crowd,
which, in spite of official anti-
Jewish measures, tried to openly
demonstrate its attachment to
Judaism, was far larger and
more enthusiastic than in pre-
vious years.
The open-air demonstration,
which was watched by thousands
of onlookers, reached its climax
when the crowd broke into the
popular Israeli song, Hevenu
Shalom Aleichem (We Brought
Peace).
In Leningrad, the president
of the local Jewish community
announced that the synagogue
would open only for four hours
from four to eight o'clock in the
evening. Some 10,000 persons
crowded into the synagogue and
into neighboring streets. Two
hours later. 30 to 40 militiamen
tried to disperse the crowd un-
der the pretext that the noise
was disturbing the quiet of an
adjacent hospital. However, no
one was arrested and the crowd

midnight.
