OSIAS ZVVERDLING vironment, it came from the Zwerdlings, especially after Osias brought to Ann Arbor his bride, Hannah Kaufman, from Manchester, England, where they were married on Dec. 25, 1907. (Mrs. Zwerdling died on Sept. 19, less than three weeks before her 81st birthday). The role Osias Zwerdling played in building up a large Jewish community — Ann Arbor Jewry now numbers close to 1,200 permanent residents and a Jewish student body of more than 2,300 — will be recalled on Sunday, when he will observe his 85th birthday. A native of Austria, Mr. Zwerdling came to this coun- try with a deep devotion to Jewish traditions. His rise to success in business, from which he retired in 1943, was never permitted to interfere with the Sabbath' observance in his home, with the kash- ruth observance which to this day necessitates his bringing Vic Hurwitz Will Edit and Direct `Flowering Peach' Vic Hurwitz, staff director and producer at WWJ-TV, will direct Center Theater's Novem- ber production of Clifford Odets' "The Flowering Peach." Acting, directing, and produc- ing at such theaters as the Peek- skill Playhouse, Papermill Play- house and Pas- adena Play- house are part of Hurwitz's background. "The Flower- ing Peach" opens one more field of endeavor f o r him — that of editing a man- Hurwitz uscript into play form. Because Odets' play was never formally edited for a working script, Hurwitz had to break all the acts down to scenes and rewrite several of the actors' parts. "The Flowering Peach" is a contemporary retelling of Noah and the Ark. To make this bibli- cal tale realistic will be a great challenge for the director. It is with his imagination and skill that storms and floods, sounds of animals and the voice of the Lord will be created by unique sound and lighting effects. "The Flowering Peach" will be presented 8:30 p.m. Nov. 9 and 10, 16 and 17, at the Jew- ish Center. Tickets are available at the Center box office. his meat products from De- troit. He was the organizer of the Beth Israel Community Center which now is linked with the U. of M. Hillel Foundation Building, and since its founding by him in 1913 he has been its president. He is honarary president *of the Bnai Brith U. of M. Hillel Foundation, is a life member of the Masons and Kiwanis Club, serves on the boards of the Ann Arbor Federal Savings and Loan and the YM-YWCA, and is co-chairman of the Ann Arbor Round Table of Christians and Jews. A lifelong Zionist, always active in the Jewish National Fund, a leader in efforts in behalf of the United Jewish Appeal and the Israel Bond drives, Mr. Zwerdling also played important roles in U.S. War Bond drives and the USO. Graduates of the University of Michigan since 1903 who now reside in many lands look to Mr. Zwerdling, as they did also to the late Mrs. Zwerdling, as the great host who encouraged them during their student days, and as the man who provided for their Jewish religious needs. And Michigan Jewish leadership considers Mr. Zwerdling one of the most loyal participants in the establishment of this state's major Jewish institutions.
