Friday, Oc tober 25, 19 63—THE DETROIT JEWIS H NEWS-1 0 Cardinal Bea's Schema Called Premature; 'Planting' Charged ROME, (JTA) — An official statement issued here by the Secretariat for Promoting Chris- tian Unity, of which Augustin Cardinal Bea is the head, made it clear that no decision has been taken as yet in the Vatican regarding the distribution of the draft of a document on Cath- olic-Jewish relations, and noth- ing has been decided as yet on the manner in which this docu- ment should be presented to the Fathers attending the Ecumen- Fathers attending the Ecumen- ical Council—was ready for sub- mission at the first session of the Council last year but was tabled because Dr. Goldmann had announced in Rome that Dr. Chaim Wardi, director of Christian affairs for the Israeli Ministry of Religion, would at- tend the Ecumenical Council as an unofficial observer represent- ing the Congress. Dr. Goldmann declared the "whole story is completely wrong." He said that Dr. Wardi was never appointed as un- official observer to the Ecu- menical Council and Dr. Gold- mann never announced his ap- pointment. Some Israeli papers, he stated, reported about the intention of the World Jewish Congress to appoint Dr. Wardi and an Italian News Agency took over this story. Dr. Goldman pointed out that he was always aware of the fact that an observer to the Council has to be invited by the Council and the World Jewish Congress has no possi- bility to appoint such an of- ficial observer. "As a matter of fact," Dr. Goldmann said, "on several oc- casions I advised Cardinal Bea not to pursue the idea of inviting Jewish observers to the Ecumenical Council because of the opposition of Jewish Or- thodoxy to it and the likelihood of an internal Jewish conflict whether to accept such an in- vitation or not whoch would only be harmful from the point of view of improving Jewish- Catholic relations which all Jewish organizations wish to bring about." Bea's office for submission to the Ecumenical Council might cause the postponement of the presentation of the document to the Council Fathers. Members of the American press panel here deplored "gossip and guess- work in relation to this delicate matter." Council sources suggested that the news in the American press on the document—which is reported to repudiate in ef- fect that the Jewish people are historically responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus — was "planted" by special-interested groups. The statement issued by the Secretariat of Cardinal Bea's office read: "In answer to questions that have been raised because of A unanimous appeal to Soviet certain articles appearing in the authorities to open the gates daily newspapers, the Secre- for Jews wishing to emigrate to tariat confirms already that two Israel marked the close of the years ago it began to draft a convention. Receiving an overwhelming ovation from his party adher- ents, Ben-Gurion said he would not touch on political or se- curity problems "which are in good hands." Instead, he told his party that Israel must be- come "an academic-labor na- tion." He demanded that every Israeli receive at least 17 years of education, from the age of 3. The last two or three years of an Israeli's education, he said, must be devoted to the learning of a profession or trade. Moshe Sharett, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, told the convention that Mapai had "a very dark future if it continues to deal with day-to- day problems, in which there are already appearances of a lack of the just and human ap- proach." He urged that Mapai renew ideologic discussions "to refresh our way of thinking and study practical views." Messages of greetings and support were received by the convention from the Socialist International. and from Harold Wilson, leader of the British Labor Party. The Socialist In- ternational noted, in its mes- sage, that its recent congresses at Amsterdam had called on the Soviet government to cease • anti-Jewish discrimination, and to permit emigration for pur- pose of family reunification.
