ADL Repudiates Study's Accuracy

By MILTON FRIEDMAN

(Copyright, 1963, JTA, Inc.)

WASHINGTON—The "respec-
table" right has launched a
smear attack on American Jew-
ish college students throughout
the country in the guise of a
study of political and religious
attitudes.
A so-called "survey" conclud-
ed that on the campus the Jew-
ish religion was in advanced
"decay" and that most Jewish
youths were apostates, atheists
and radicals.
Brandeis University was sin-
gled out for special treatment
in the pseudo - scientific "sur-
vey" of student attitudes toward
politics and religion. Other
schools "studied" were Boston
University, Sarah Lawrence,
South Carolina, Williams, How-
ard, Yale, Reed, Marquette,
Davidson, Indiana, and Stanford.
The allegedly objective inves-
tigation of political and reli-
gious beliefs was conducted by
the Educational Reviewer, Inc.,
and published in a special issue
of the "National Review," a
right-wing journal of opinion.
An attempt was made to
equate Jews as a group with
the extreme socialism and athe-
ism of the left.
Copies of the "study" are
flooding the academic com-
munity.
Officials of Bnai Brith Hil-
lel Foundation repudiated the
accuracy of the alleged find-
ings.
The purported scientific eval-
uation disclosed no information
as to the numbers of students
polled at each school or other
vital criteria.
The purpose of the "National
Review" appeared the spread-
ing of a notion that adherence
to rigid conservatism and reli-
gious dogma meant patriotism
while liberalism and the inquir-
ing mind equalled subversion.
The "survey" made such
sweeping conclusions as "Jew-
ish students tend to be less
anti - Communist than Christian
students" and that "socialism is
strongest among non-believers,
Jews, and Negroes, in that or-
der."
Depicting a "Judaism in de-
cay," the so-called study claim-
ed it discovered "large - scale
defections" from Judaism on
the campus.
It went so far as to allege
that there had been a rate of
100 per cent "Jewish apostasy"
at Marquette University in Mil-
waukee, a Jesuit school.
At Sarah Lawrence, a wo-
men's college with high aca-
demic standing, it was alleged
that "over 55 per cent of Jew-
ish-raised students have aposta-
sized" while the apostasy rate
at Williams was put at 49 per
cent. And "even at predomi-
nantly Jewish Brandeis, 37 per
cent of Jewish-raised students
are no longer formally affili-
ated with Judaism."
Claiming a "general rejec-
tion of Judaism by Jewish
students," the poll said that
Zionism was repudiated and
that even at Brandeis only 1'7
per cent of students regarded
Israel as a national Jewish
home.

Seventy per cent of Brandeis
students were represented as
having no religious objections
to birth control, extramarital
intercourse, homosexuality, pre-
marital intercourse, divorce, and
legalized abortion.
It was claimed that 79 per
cent of Brandeis students—the
largest proportion of any cam-
pus polled—believed members
of the Communist party should-
be permitted to hold teaching
positions in American colleges.
President Sachar of Brandeis,
a former national director of
the Hillel Foundations, will find
the unkindest cut of all in the
charge that 86 per cent of
Brandeis students are said to
decline Hillel membership. The
fact is that the whole Brandeis
University is like one huge
Hillel establishment.

N.Y. Federation Aims
at $22,500,000 Goal

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
$22,500,000 campaign of the Fed-
eration of Jewish Philanthropies
of New York for this year is the
largest in the Federation's 46-
year history.
The campaign will continue
through next January and will
be conducted by 15,000 volun-
teer workers, Irving Mitchel
Felt, president of Federation,
said. Last year, he reported, the
Federation's agencies served
more than 1,000,000 Now York-
ers of various faiths and races.

said, 3'7 per cent of Jewish-
reared students consider
themselves as no longer for-
mally affiliated with Judaism.
The survey said that the
Brandeis figure did not fully
record "the extent of the debili-
tating effect which even a
liberal arts college with a large
Jewish majority has on its
Jewish students." The survey
declared that while 63 per cent
of Brandeis Jewish students
remain linked with the religion
of their childhood, only 31 per
cent agree that they "profess
Judaism as a religion, agreeing
wholly or substantially with its
beliefs and traditions."
The survey found that 29 per
cent of those students tend to
identify or associate with Jews
more than with Gentiles and
therefore tend to think of
themselves as Jewish which,
the survey commented, "con-
stitutes a conception of Jewish-
ness based mainly on race."
Another 26 per cent consider
themselves Jewish only because
their parents consider them-
selves Jewish only in the sense
of having interest in certain cul-.
tural features of the Jewish
tradition, such as music, food
and literature," a still more
limited conception of Jewish-
ness" which the survey com-
pared with the feeling of the
American of Irish origin to-
ward wearing the green on St.
Patrick's day.
Stanford is one campus
where a majority still profess
Judaism-68 per cent—but it
is also the only school in the
poll where an appreciable num-
ber = seven per cent — "totally

reject" their Judaism. At Bran-
deis, however, none of the
sampled students reject com-
pletely their Judaism.
Another significant factor
is the nearly total absence of
belief among all the students
polled in basic creedal ele-
ments of their faiths. No
more than six per cent of the
Jewish students polled at
Brandeis agree with the
Judaic conception of a bene-
volent omnipotent One God.
While a substantial number
of all students polled believe
in the immortality of the
human soul—Jewish students
less than Catholics—only a
minority affirm the existence
of a God capable of exer-
cising an effect on their
lives, with Jewish students
the minority in that minority.
Coming on the heels of an
American Jewish Committee
report that exposure to college
education tends to more than
double the rate of intermar-
riage in the third Jewish gen-
eration, the National Review
survey is a disturbing develop-
ment if its conclusions do not
merely mirror the conservative
predictions of the magazine.
The basic burden of the
magazine's piece seems to be
that liberal colleges tend to
water down the religious foun-
dations of its students. How-

ever, the reverse could be the

greater truth — that liberal

schools magnetize large num-
bers of students who are al-
ready conditioned in their re-
ligious, irreligious or areligious
thinking.
Most baffling in the survey
is the meaning of the word
"defection," since it is used
interchangeably with "apostiza-
tion." Apostacy in the Jewish
connotation smacks of shmad,
conversion. Assuming the ac-
curacy of the study, it is un-
believable that so many Jewish
students in the colleges have
made the jump over the re-
ligious fence or are contem-
plating to do so in the near
future. In addition, some of the
questions seem loaded. Differ-
ently formulated • they might
have elicited different replies.
