Appeals from leading rabbis
abroad, including the Chief
Rabbi in London, have been
submitted to President Kennedy
urging release. of Morton So-
bell, in his 14th year of im-
prisonment on a conspiracy to
commit espionage charge of
which he asserts his innocence.
Mrs. Morton Sobell, recently
returned from a trip overseas
to obtain support, announced
that the new appeals have been
submitted to Washington. One
is from Rabbi Israel Brodie,
Chief Rabbi in London.
A separate appeal from the
Chief Rabbi of Israel, Yits'hak
Nissim, asking the President to
grant clemency, has been en-
dorsed by Rabbi E. Berlinger,
Chief Rabbi of Amsterdam,
Holland, Rabbi L. Vorst, Chief
Rabbi of Rotterdam, and other
noted rabbis and Jewish schol-
ars abroad, including Dr. Mar-
tin Buber of Israel.
Many leading rabbis in the
United States have previously
pleaded for Morton Sobell's re-
lease, including Rabbi Balfour
Brickner, Rabbi Maurice Eisen-
drath, Rabbi Simon Greenberg,
Rabbi Henry Halpern, Rabbi
Arthur J. Lelyveld, Rabbi Uri
Miller, Rabbi Jacob J. Wein
stein.
They are among over 1500
clergymen of various faiths
who have questioned the Sobell
trial and called for his freedom.
Sobell was convicted in the
trial with Julius and Ethel
Rosenberg, who also maintained
their innocence. Sobell was
never accused of atomic espion-
age. There was only one wit-
ness against him, and a study
by Dr. Reinhold Niebuhr and
an independent group called
the case against Sobell "vague
in content and slender in proof."
