isolated Jewish community of
Karachi, Pakistan, which num-
bers about 400 persons.

The project has been under-
taken by Beth Aaron as a result
of a visit to the Karachi com-

and Mrs. Ben Z. Freeman, 18005

the Karachi community. Bibles
and other materials will be

also arranged with the Jewish

Praying Customs

By RABBI SAMUEL F. FOX

(Copyright. 1963, JTA, Inc.)

Why do some people place
their right hand over their
left hand while praying?

In the kabbalistic teachings,
the left hand symbolizes judg-
ment while the right hand
symbolizes mercy. Mercy is thus
placed over judgment and thus
represents the symbol of our
prayers that the Almighty be-
stow mercy upon us even when
we are guilty, according to
judgment.

Why do many people bow
their heads a little downward
while praying?

During prayer the Jew is ask-
ed to incline his eyes downward
while his thoughts and his heart
concentrate Heavenward. He
thus acquires a new kind of
vision—the vision of the heart
and soul which is far more
reaching than the vision of the
eyes. The eyes have only physi-
cal vision while the heart has
spiritual vision. During the
course of our prayers it is spir-
itual vision that we experience,
if we have the proper concen-
tration.

Why does a Jew take three
steps backward then three
steps forward before citing
the basic prayers of the
Shomnel Esr eh?

It is said that Moses, when
he offered his prayers to G-d,
had to proceed through three
areas of darkness to reach the
light. Taking these three steps
the individual visions himself
as penetrating through three
curtains of darkness that sepa-
rate him from the eternal light
of the Creator. •

effect Jan. 1. Commitments
made prior to the adoption of
the rule, he declared, should be
fulfilled.
The resolution adopted by the
rabbis of this region declared:
"In order to emphasize the sac-
red character of the wedding
ceremony, the members of the
Rabbinical Assembly of North-
ern New Jersey will henceforth
officiate at wedding ceremonies
only in those places where diet-
ary laws are observed. Restau-
rants, catering establishments,
or hotels that do not provide
kosher facilities for a wedding
will be henceforth regarded as
unsuitable places for holding the
wedding ceremony.
"Furthermore, we urge our
congregants to give preferance
to the synagogue or home in
which to hold the marriage cere-
mony in order to indelibly im-
press upon the bride and groom
the essential role that these two
institutions should play in con-
serving the precious traditions
of Jewish life."
