The committee is composed of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, Minister of Police Bechor Shi- treet, Interior Minister Moshe Shapiro and Minister of Trans- port Israel Bar Yehuda. The demonstrations have been going addressed the rally were Rabbi Kalman Kahana, Deputy Educa- tion Minister, and Dr. I. S. Ben- Meir, Deputy Interior Minister. The participation of the Jerusa_ lem Chief Rabbi and the two Deputy Ministers was seen as an indication of growing public support for measures against continuing missionary activities. The Deputy Ministers associ- ated themselves with a resolu- tion at the rally which called for laws against the conversion of minors and which urged proselytization without "the in fluence of material gain." Another speaker was Avra- ham Ravitz of the Hever Ha- peillim, an international or- ganization of yeshiva students, which sponsored the rally. The organization initiated and assumed responsibility for the demonstrations by student zealots against mission schools in Jerusalem, Jaffa and Haifa on Sept. 10. More than 100 youths were arrested. Ravitz reiterated that the stu- dent organization respected the churches and Christian cultural institutions of all denominations and he deplored the "fact" that the initial reports of the Sept. 10 demonstrations, both in Is- rael and overseas, "misconstru- ed" the motives of the demon- strators as anti-Christian. ing — TEL AVIV—An Israeli court imposed fines Monday on 10 Jewish religious zealots who in vaded Scottish and French mis- sion schools on Sept. 10. The defendants, part of a group of more than 100 such demonstrators, also were given suspended six month prison terms. Eight of the youths were fined $66 and the other two were fined $33. The raids were aimed at mission schools in sev- eral cities. The raids were or- ganized by the Society of Activi- ties of the Torah Camp. on for more than 10 weeks, with many of the actions by the ultra-Orthodox being centered near the Mandelbaum Gate, where tourists arrive from the Jordanian area. Some members of the cabinet favored, during the continuing debate, the rerouting of Man- delbaum Gate traffic on Satur- days, so as to bypass the sen- sitive neighborhoods. Other Min- isters, who have inspected the area, opposed such a plan, say- ing it would be tantamount to "submission" to to ultra-Ortho- dox, who would then make further demands. Efforts to form a public com- mittee to combat missionary ac- tivities in Israel were underway following a mass rally which was addressed by Chief Rabbi Eliyahu Pardess of Jerusalem and two Deputy Ministers. The committee will be made up of members of all political parties, as well as public fig- ures not affiliated with par- ties. One of its tasks will be to convey to diplomats of coun- tries with such missions in Israel the "sense of indigna- tion" of the public concerning the activities of the Christian institutions and to ask the governments to recall those missions.
