Friday, October 4, 1963 -- THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS, -- 8 Verwoerd Likens Israel's Arab Refugee Situation to Apartheid (Continued from Page One) that Israel's latest move must not arouse resentment against South African Jews. Verwoerd told the country: "The Jews of South Africa are citizens of South Africa and have shown how deeply they resent Israel's attitude. There must not be any anti-Jewish feeling in South Africa. The government stand- point is this: If feelings were motivated here against Jews, we would commit the same in- justice to them as the world is committing against us." At a meeting here Sunday night, addressed by Leon Dul- tzin, chairman of the Jewish Agency's economic department in Jerusalem, Joseph Daleski, vice-chairman of the South African Zionist Federation, stated that "every Jew in South Africa welcomes Dr. Verwoerd's reaffirmation that the Jewish community here must not be held responsible for the acts of Israel's government. "Israel," said the Zionist leader, "is a sovereign state, Technion. Dinner Oct. 13; Chicago Leader to Speak The Detroit chapter of the American Technion Society will hold its 18th annual dinner meeting at 6:3 0 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 13, at Congregation Shaarey . DAVID SILBERT Zedek, Northwestern and Bell Road. The society is the sponsoring organization for Technion-Israel Institute of Technology at Haifa, Israel. Robert Brody, 14411 W. Eight Mile, is president of the chap- ter. David Silbert, prominent Chi- cago attorney and a national vice piesident of Technion, will be guest speaker. Over the years, he has en- gaged in many community and philanthropic projects in Chi- cago. He is a director of the Jewish Welfare Fund of Met- ropolitan Chicago. In 1960, he was chairman of trades, indus- tries and. professions of the Combined Jewish Appeal and in 1951 was general chairman and is currently its pregident. Silbert was formerly presi- dent and chairman of the board of the Chicago chapter of the society and was recently elected to the board of governors of the Institute of Technology. There will be no fund or membership solicitation at the meeting, Brody stated. solely responsible for its own decisions. South African Jews are South African citizens whose loyalty to South Africa has been demonstrated in peace and in war." Clarifying the Zi- onist position further, Dal- eski added: "This does not ex- clude our ties with the Jewish peoples' national restoration in the land of their fathers. Zion- ism is part of the Jewish hopes, dreams and faith." Prime Minister Verwoerd had declared in his address that "Israel's decision not to replace her Minister in South Africa was not only a rebuff to South Africa but also a slap in the face of South African Jewry, which has done so much to help Israel and was principally served by Israel's Minister here. They did not deserve that blow." Continuing, the Premier re- called that, "when Israel was born, and other nations stood aside, South Africa was among the first to recognize and to help the new State. Now Israel is turning against South Africa, to curry the favor of the Afri- can states." "Israel," he said, "condemns South African apartheid, but herself exists on a form of apartheid which affirms the Jewish State's separateness and the right to exclude Arab refu- gees. If the Israel government should be in difficulties through choosing the wrong friends, South Africa would not easily help her again. If the present Israel opposition came to power, it would be a differ- ent matter. But the present Is- rael government could not ex- ; pect help after the way it has treated South Africa." . Dr. Verwoerd told his fol !lowers that they must not act against South Africa's 116,000 Jews because of Israel's posi- tion. "It would be unfair." he i stated, "to take revenge on them for what others have done to South Africa, for the Jews of South Africa suffer most for this. Jews of South Africa are citizens of this country. They have chosen how they regret and depreciate this act by Is- rael." Reiterating that no anti-Jew- fish feeling need arise in South Africa, The Premier said "we ;are all human." He noted that "some" people were inclined to attack the Jewish community in South Africa when occasion- inally a Jew is seen among "Afro-Asian agitators." He spoke at the second con- ference held here by prominent Italians on the situation of the Jews in the Soviet Union. He declared that of 149 death sentences . passed on so-called economic criminals, 60 per cent were inflicted on Jews.
