N.Y. Mayor Signs
Fair Sabbath Law
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Mayor
Robert F. Wagner signed the
"Fair Sabbath" law which per-
mits so-called "family stores"
that are closed Saturdays to be
open on Sundays. New York
City was authorized by the State
Legislature last spring to adopt
such legislation.
The Mayor was congratulated
for signing the bill by several
groups representing the Jewish
community, including the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress and the
New York Board of Rabbis. The
ordinance was passed by the city
council two weeks ago and en-
tered into power following the
Mayor's signature.

OWER, son of Mr. and Mrs.

to the U.S. Public Health Serv-
ice — Radiological Council. He
was the first director of the
Medical X-Ray Research Labora-
tory — Research Branch — Divi-
sion of Radiological Health —
U.S. Public Health Service. At
present, he is chief resident of
radiology at Massachusetts Gen-
eral Hospital, Boston, Mass.

by Sylvan Lebow, executive di-
rector of the National Federa-
tion of Temple Brotherhoods,
which has just been published
by the Union of American He-
brew Congregations.

Israel Names Avner
Envoy to Canada
JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Ger-
shon Avner, Israel's Minister to
Norway and formerly director
of the United States Division
of the Foreign Ministry, has
been named Israel's Ambassa-
dor to Canada. He replaces
Ambassador Yaacov Herzog
who is now deputy director-
general of the Foreign Min-
istry.

to Present Award to
Martin Luther King
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
will be honored by the United
Synagogue of America at its
convention in November during
special exercises marking the
100th anniversary of the Eman-
cipation Proclamation.
Dr. King will be presented
with the Solomon Schechter
Award for his role "in translat-
ing the prophetic vision of
Abraham Lincoln into a living
reality." The only other recipi-
ent of the award, which is
named for the founder of the
United Synagogue, was Senator
Herbert H. Lehman who receiv-
ed it in 1947.
