Farbstein Says Soviet Union Plans Death of Judaism

Appeal to Soviet Union on Jews

NEW YORK — "From all
available evidence, it seems clear
that the Soviet rulers are deter-
mined to wipe out Judaism as a
religion," Rep. Leonard A. Farb-
stein (D., N.Y.) charged in , a
speech delivered before 200
leaders of Farband-Labor Zion-
ist Order.
Citing recent published re-
ports of the systematic closing
of synagogues and the refusal
of Soviet authorities to allow
Jewish cemetery ground for the
burial of the dead, Farbstein
said that the situation of the
Soviet Jews is getting "more
repressive than ever."
Farbstein told the gathering
that only last week the First Sec-
retary of the Soviet Embassy in
Washington, Anatoly G. Mish-
kov, came to see him in pur-
suit of establishing better rela-
tions with the USA.
Farbstein revealed that he
told the Soviet diplomat that
better relations are impeded so
long as Americans hear reports
of Soviet persecution of Jews.
He cited the numerous instances
of synagogue closings, the ban
on baking matzoth (unleavened
bread for Passover), the arrest
and trial of Jews who baked
matzoth on the charge of al-
leged "black marketeering," and
the whole trend of placing Jews

of good relations between the
USSR and the USA, Farbstein
said he cautioned the Soviet rep-
resentative that when you have

ture, they turn into "big ob-

days, the letter asked the Soviet
Ambassador to request that the
Soviet government consider the
deteriorating situation of Soviet
Jewry. The letter referred to
