Kenneth B. Keating, New York Republican, marked the opening of the meeting of the Senate on Rosh Hashanah. Senate Democratic leader Mike Mansfield of Montana ex- pressed appreciation for the prayer offered by Keating. "It was most moving and touching and I think it was in the best possible taste," Mansfield aid. He expressed belief that the Senate was indebted to Keat- ing for the prayer voiced in the Senate Chamber. When the Jews reached the gardens, it was found that the iron gate leading to the lake was padlocked and the parti- cipants would have to pass through the turnstiles to get to the site. This, Rabbi Samuel Schrage asserted, was not per- mitted on the Holy Days. He also said that Dr. George S. Avery, garden director, insisted the Jews would have to go through the turnstiles. So Rabbi Schrage called City Hall and Assistant Chief Inspec- tor Patrick Whalen ordered a police emergency squad to take action. The squad members took the hinges off the big iron gate and the 6,000 Jews walked in, led by Rebbe Mena chem Schneerson, leader of the Lu- bavitcher chassidic movement. * * * LONDON, (JTA)—More than 1,500 Jews attended the Rosh Hashanah services in the Mos- cow central synagogue which were conducted by Chief Rabbi Yehuda Leib Levin, according to reports from the Soviet capi- tal. The majority were elderly people. In an interview in the Tu- nisian newspaper, Jeune Afri- que, Marshal Aref also said he sees no possibility for an Arab- Jewish state within a federation of Arab countries. "Our only aim is to annihilate Israel," he declared, adding that, as long as Jews considered themselves a nation, "there is no other solution to the Pales- tine issue except war." . * * * Rabbinate from Moscow Chief Rabbi Yehuda Leib Levin as well as from the Chief Rabbis of Hungary and Czechoslovakia, it was announced by Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim. This campaign, which has been directed at all religious groups, has grown in intensity in recent years and has prevented nor- mal maintenance and devel- opment of Jewish religious and cultural life. It has been very difficult to do anything effective for people of the Jewish faith in the Soviet Union. Our Ambassador in Moscow has, however, talked to Soviet officials on a num- ber of occasions concerning this subject, and I mentioned part of the problem when I saw Khrushchev. I am con- sidering what further action might be appropriate. "The problem of divided flmilies, which you also men- tion, is not confined to one particular group, and we are constantly working on this problem in all the Soviet bloc countries." Worshippers to Recite Prayer for Soviet Jews JERUSALEM, (JTA)—A spe- cial prayer for the fate of Soviet Jewry, to be recited during the opening of the ark on Yom Kip- pur, has been distributed by the Chief Rabbinate to 15,000 syna- gogues in Israel and throughout the world. The prayer, which was com- posed by Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim, calls for Divine inter- cession to end the oppression of Russian Jewry. Noting that Russian Jewry had been separated from the mainstream of the Jewish peo- ple, and "that they have been deprived of their freedom and their synagogues and houses of learning have been shut down," the prayer asks for Divine inter- vention to "deliver them from their servitude and grant them freedom" to observe the Torah without interference and to emi- grate to the Holy Land.
