Students in Many Cities Mourn Mrs. Zwerdling's Death Former University of Mich- igan students in many cities throughout the land are mourn- ing the passing on Sept. 19 of Mrs. Hannah Zwerdling of 1056 Baldwin, Ann Arbor. Born in England, Nov. 6, 1882, she would have been 81 in six weeks. Together with her husband, Osias, the distinguished Ann Arbor leader, Mrs. Zwerdling had created a hospitable atmosphere for many Jew- ish students. Those who sought advice, many who wanted kosher meals, the observant who Mrs. Zwerdling wished to mark the festivals properly, were assisted by the Zwerd- lings, and Mrs. .Zwerdling always was the proper hostess whose home was open to young Jews from many American cities and from other lands. Mrs. Zwerdling was active in Beth Israel Sisterhood and Hadassah of Ann Arbor and shared her husband's many - interests in Hillel Foundation, the Jewish National Fund, the Zionist movement, Israel Bond Organization, Bnai Brith, cam- pus affairs, civic causes and the national organizations with which they were affiliated. She accompanied her husband to many important conventions. On their 50th wedding anni- versary, on Jan. 5, 1958, the Zwerdlings were given com- munity-wide honors in Ann Arbor. Mrs. Zwerdling was the former Hannah Kaufman of Manchester, England. The Isadore Singer Dies Isadore Singer, a retired baker who was well known in many local fraternal circles, died sud- denly at his home, 18610 Santa Rosa, Sept. 18, on the eve of Rosh Hashanah. Funeral services were held at Hebrew Memorial Chapel on Sun- day morning. Mr. Singer was active in Con- gregation Beth Abraham, was a regular attendant at its services and participated in the daily Mishnaic studies at the syna- gogue. Eli Almi, Noted Jewish Author, Commits Suicide NEW YORK, (JTA) - Eli Almi, a prominent Jewish writer, committed suicide Sept. 24. He had been director of the Yid- dish-Hebrew department of the United Jewish Appeal from its inception until his retirement several years ago. Born in Warsaw in 1892, he came to the United States as a youth and entered Jewish jour- nalism as a columnist for the Jewish Daily News in 1913. He was a member of the American Philosophical Society, the Yid- dish PEN Club, the I. L. Peretz Writers Club and the Spinoza Institute of America. He was the author of 18 volumes of essays as well as five volumes of poetry and three collections of short stories as well as many pamphlets.
