Now it is a bit too late even to fight for such a treasured goal: there are too few Jews left to crave for it, and too many of them are, indeed, so "completely adapted" to the scheme of things in that country—along Communist lines—that all we can do is weep for the past! The anniversary of the German attack on Poland—September 1 —was the occasion for expressions of sympathy by Polish official- dom to the Jewish community for the losses that were suffered by Jewry. It was utilized to recall the heroism of the Jews during the revolt in the Warsaw Ghetto. * * The current issue of the illustrated magazine Poland, in its 'In the Name of Allah ... In the Cause of Shalom' English edition, published in Warsaw, explained the contents of During the debate at the UN Security Council over the the issue as follows: Syrian infiltrations into Israel and the murder of two Israelis, In presenting our readers with a picture of the days when Ghana's Ambassador Alex Quaison-Sackey spoke, thus, for peace: we paid homage to the heroism and the great cause of the War- "In the name of Allah, let the two states come together and saw Ghetto uprising, we want, at the same time, to take a stand on a problem that is an incessant subject of discussion: the truth about the days of the Ghetto. Truth is a concept which is closely and inherently linked with the problem of justice. The recent Eichmann trial revealed most forcefully that truth con- tinues to be an ever-present necessity. Not in order to foment hatred and resentment, but on the contrary: to diffuse humanism and tolerance; to understand the utterly inhuman aspect of genocide. The demand for justice for the victims and their hangmen never had nor has its source in hatred, as suggested by some people directly interested in effacing the traces of truth. The meting out of justice is closely connected with the evaluation of the social and moral activity and deeds of human beings, and its purpose is above all of an educational and pro- phylactic nature. We want to make the present-day community sensitive to phenomena and actions which lay at the roots of the tragedy of the Warsaw Ghetto: to racism, anti-Semitism, intolerance and militarism. And we are fully entitled to do so. Not only because the fighters and inhabitants of the Ghetto were Polish citizens and their tragedy and struggle a noble and tragic page of our national tragedy and struggle. But, above all, be- cause at a time when many influential and important people in the West kept silent and did not believe—we spread the truth about the magnitude of Nazi genocide and gave the ideological and practical reasons for the criminal action; we hastened to help the victims as much as that was possible; we died at the Ghetto walls We hid and preserved some 30,000 of the ghetto inmates, paying for this often with the lives of our nearest and dearest as well. Today we demand consistently, again and again, full justice. And, finally, in the works of our historians, writers and artists we have given a complete and detailed picture of this tragedy which befell mankind- as a whole. At the source of the spiritual inspiration of their creative work lie the same injunc- tions which mankind has to save and preserve if it wants to endure. Let us then heed their voices. Communal Leader Deplores Globke's Visit in Italy (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) ROME — Dr. Sergio Piperno, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, deplored Tuesday the fact that West Ger- man Chancellor Konrad Ade- nauer who arrived here Monday for consultations with Italian of- ficials was accompanied by Dr. Hans Globke, his state secretary. Piperno, in a statement to the press, said that Globke had been accused of collaboration with Nazism, particularly in writing a commentary on the Nazi Nuremberg Racial Laws. Let us admit ing that the results of a West government inquiry into that there was such a warm response to the heroism of the Jews German the charges had never been and that their Polish "fellow citizens" were cooperative in the published and that the charges revolt against Nazism by Jews who fought their last battle. Yet, on the record, there is proof that there was much collaboration had not been denied, the Italian with the Nazis against the Jews by Poles and that many more Jewish leader conceded that the could have been saved with proper aid from Christians during the Adenauer government was try- ing to repair the "material dam- Warsaw Ghetto Revolt. However, he added, punish- Jagiellonian University, writing on the subject "Jews and the Fight for Poland's Independence," makes some very interesting ment of Nazi collaborators or at observations which also contain some revealing facts. His articles least their elimination from high and influential public offices states in part: was still more important. It is the duty of the historian to make a full record of the participation of the Jews in the Polish insurrection, for the part played by them is tangible proof that the integration of Jews had made considerable progress. The process of integration continued, although a different trend made its appearance in the 1880's. Anti-Semitism, which originated in Prussia, in the German provinces of Austria and in Russia—but not in Poland— won supporters in Poland too. Zionism, which began to gain ground among the Polish Jews, was probably a reaction and an incentive to anti-Semitism. The Polish state, reborn in 1918 (with the active participation of Jews, some holding very important positions), could not find a solution to the problem of a group of the population which, though different, yet was bound by close historical ties with Polish society, which though different was so scattered that it was impossible to solve the issue by establishing some form of autonomy, for a large number of persons of Jewish extraction had became completely adapted to the Polish society. Although a solution for the Jewish population of Poland was not found, yet all proposals derived from the principle of racial discrimination were rejected. The one and only draft providing that the Jewish group be designated as 'alien' was proposed in the Polish Seym in 1938 but it never became a bill because it was not endorsed by a sufficient number of signatures (a fact that bears out the weakness of this trend in Poland). "Consequently the crime perpetrated by the Nazis against the Jewish population in Poland, was a crime against a com- ponent part of the Polish population, a group that had been for centuries integrated with Polish society. It was tantamount to the annihilation of a group whose contribution to Polish culture far surpassed their numerical strength." The assertion that "Zionism was an incentive to anti-Semitism" smacks of a party prejudice. Traditionally, Poland was to have been friendly to Zionism because it enabled Jews the country didn't particularly cherish as citizens to find homes in a Jewish environment. At this time, when Poland and Israel have an inter- change of diplomatic relations, with a record of hundreds of thousands of Polish Jews having escaped death through flight to Israel, it is puzzling to read the distinguished professor's reference to the great Jewish freedom movement. Then there is the reference to the attempts to stamp Jews in Poland as "aliens." That seemed for many years to be a policy, written or unwritten, in Poland. Prof. Grzybowski also seems to overlook the fact that after the first world war there was a series of pogroms during which Jewish communities were destroyed and Jews expatriated. Furthermore—isn't it a fact that even now anti-Semitic remarks are heard in Poland, and very often Poles will comment that Hitler hasn't completed his job? There are less than 30,000 Jews in Poland, yet, as Jews, they are not the equals the professor would lead us to believe. Members of the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia, including the King himself, are frequent visitors in Geneva, as is the Sheik of Kuwait and other Arab dignitaries . . . They all stay at the modern Hotel du Rhone, where American Jews and Israelis are welcomed guests . . . Sometimes they appear in the lobby of the hotel in their Arab garb, but more often they are dressed in European civilian suits . . . Only the top members of the royal household stick to their Arab robes and headgear and for them a row of cadillacs is always waiting in front of the hotel .. . They appear in the lobby escorted by bodyguards and never mingle with other guests, Jewish or non-Jewish . . . How- ever, other members of their entourage prefer to spend their free hours on the sunny terrace of the hotel sipping coffee, coca cola and other non-alcoholic beverages . . . Next to their tables one can hear conversations in fluent Hebrew by Israelis who are similarly enjoying the Alpine sun . . . To emphasize their Arab nationality, the Arabs usually read at the terrace Arab newspapers sent to them by airmail from their native lands .. . They show no sign of disturbance over the fact that they are under the same roof with Israelis and practically rub shoulders with them . .. Nor are the Israelis annoyed by the presence of the Arabs next to their tables at the restaurant of the hotel and in the cafe house . . . Switzerland is a free country and every- body, irrespective of his nationality, is welcomed any hotel here . . . Even at the headquarters of the United Nations here — the former headquarters of the League of Nations — one does not feel the spirit of animosity between 'Arab and Israeli which is usually felt at the United Nations headquarters in New York .. . One gains the impression that if Arab-Israeli peace talks will ever take place, they will probably be initiated in Geneva . . Here the atmosphere is conducive to such talks much more than in New York or in any other city in the world. CASABLANCA (JTA) —The newspaper, Al Alam, organ of the Istiqlal opposition party, appeared with a front-page arti- cle appealing to all Arab states to unite in undertaking immedi- ate warfare against Israel.
