Wearing of Taleisim
on Yom Kippur Night

On the night of Yom Kippur
men wear their large Taleisim
(Prayer Shawls) while this is
never done on any other night.
During the year, the night is
not a time when fringes are
required thus they are not worn
(as a Talith) during the eve-
ning service. On the night of
Yom Kippur, man is raised to
the level of an angel. Thus his
night is as active as his day at
that time. Since a Talith is
not worn at night because it
is not a time when the human
sees or perceives as well, this is
not applicable to Yom Kippur
since angels perceive as well
at night as during the day and
men are angels on Yom Kippur.

Period of Study in the. Synagogue

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright, 1963, JTA, Inc.)

Why is it customary in the
synagogue to have a period of
study conducted by the Rabbi
or some other scholarly per-
son between the Minchah and
Ma'ariv prayer services?

The Minchah service is the
last service of the day and the

Ma'ariv service is the evening

gent left—so that the night and
day would be interlocked with
the presence of the priests and
that the transfer from day to
night would not take place with-
out the attention of the priests.
Since both the night and the
day were to be spent in the
study of the Torah, it became
important to see that both their
beginnings and end should be
started and finished with the
Study of the Torah. It is for
this reason that some will rise
before daybreak and study the
Torah so that they will like-
wise make a bridge from night
to day with Torah Study.
Some expound that it is only
a man can possibly see the
unity and cohesiveness between

traced to the practice of having

the table in the sanctuary be-
