Mr. William Cohen, Prop.

By RUTH MORRIS
"She died on a Tuesday on
Tishri 4, 1637. Her death aug-
mented Jewish sorrow; that
crown of the people has fallen
and the provider of the poor
is gone; her death compares
with the candles of the Me-
norah, broken and extin-
guished. Her equal is not to
be found, among women.
Kings bowed their heads and
princes bent their knees be-
fore her."

So reads the inscription on
the tombstone of a Polish
woman of great beauty and wis-
dom, buried in the Jewish ceme-
tery in Lemberg.

The great woman beneath the
monument was known as the
"Golden Rose." When she was
young, she had a head of silken
golden hair that glistened like
gold in the warm summer sun.

When she married Nachum
ben Isaac, she submitted hum-
bly to have her long shimmering
hair cut off as was the custom
in Poland and other European
countries. But not only because
of her silken tresses was she
known as the "Golden Rose;"
but because she was a generous
helper to every person, in need.
So deeply was her kindness
and generosity rooted in the
hearts of many people that they
found relief in tears they shed
over her grave. But she was not
only a woman of exceptional
beauty, she also was clever and
astute in her important business
dealings. Her husband, Nachum
ben Isaac, was engaged for
.years in complicated litigation
with the Jesuits over- a beautiful
synagogue which Rose's father
had built. All his life, Isaac had
extensive business relations
with the Polish nobility.

When her husband died,
Rose courageously continued
his business and through her
rare business acumen, she
amassed a considerable for-
tune.
Owing to her great wealth
and rare beauty, she gained in-
fluence with the nobility and
the clergy. She also stood in
great favor with the Lemberg
starostea, Mnizik, who possessed
great political power. Through
her close connections, she was
able to intercede in court in be-
half of her fellow Jews.
The Polish government had
built many granaries in a num-
ber of cities and the tradesmen
had to pay toll for their use.
Rose held the license for the
coveted toll gates in the Lem-
berg region under lease and
reaped considerable income
from the project.
Many of the nobles were at
her mercy for she held mort-
gages on their estates and she
thus became the owner of num-
erous important estates and
forests. Although, at that time,
Jews were not permitted to deal
in land and the magistrate pro-
tested, she was allowed to keep
a large tract of land the sta-
rostea had given her.
She went to Warsaw and
pleaded the cause of the syna-
gogue before the king. So
eloquent was her plea that the
king directed the magistrate
to find a place for the Jesuits
and returned the synagogue
to the Jews.
As Rose advanced in years,
the more beautiful she grew.
The clergy, the nobles and the
starostea vied with one another
in seeking her favor.
Everything went well with
her until she became hopelessly
and helplessly involved in a
large transaction, which became
the subject of litigation. She
finally became discouraged. Her
many enterprises began to suf-
fer, her influence waned and
she became nervous and irrit-
able. Soon she fell sick and
died. She survived her husband
by 29 years.
How highly Rose was es-
teemed can be gleaned from
documents in the old archives
in which Jews were designated
as "infidels," but Rose is spoken
of with the prefix "Lady," a title
applied only to Gentile nobles.
Her only son, Isaac, had the
title of "royal subject." In his
relations with the peasants and
Jews, he kept himself aloof as
a genuine noble.
A few days after his mother's
death, he was condemned to
death by the Radom court for
his failure to carry - out a con-
tract which he had made with
the government. But the death
sentence was never carried out,
for Isaac fled and kept in hid-
ing. He was never heard of
again.
