"I am sure that all Americans, whatever their faith, join me in extending to each person celebrating Rosh Hashanah best wishes for a happy new year." Armistice Body Censures Jordan for Killing Israeli JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission condemned Jordan "in the most strenuous terms" for a shooting fray last Tuesday, in which an Israeli workman was killed near Jerusalem. The killing occurred when Jordanians fired across the Je- rusalem demarcation lines at a truck transporting workers at Orah settlement. The commis- sion termed the shooting "a fla- grant breach" of the armistice, and called on Jordan to take "appropriate measures" to pre- vent a recurrence. The commission also con- demned Israel for firing across the same lines, presumably af- ter the Jordan shooting, saying evidence showed that the Israel action was not necessarily "an exchange of fire." WARREN — Member Federal Deposit Ins. Corp. ish and French charges d'affaires called on the Foreign Ministry to protest the raids while the French Consul General in Jeru- salem, Lucien Pierre Lemoine, called on the District Governor here, S. B. Yeshaya, with a simi- lar protest. Lemoine said that St. Joseph's as a French cultural institution never engaged in missionary activities. Israelis who chose to send their children there, he said, paid tuition fees for courses freely available at government schools. Noting that he had received many protests from French clergymen, Le- moine said that there were never any previous complaints about the convent. In his statement expressing regret over the incidents, Prem- ier Eshkol stressed that the government "will use its author- ity to bring those responsible to trial and to prevent the recur- rence of such regrettable inci- dents." Religious A f f a i r s Minister Zorah Warhaftig also voiced re- gret over the demonstrations, emphasizing that he "opposed and denounced this form of ac- tion." He said that the proper and effective method of com- batting Christian missionary ac- tivity was not by futile demon- strations but by ensuring an elementary and secondary Jew- ish education to every Jewish child. In Jerusalem, the demonstra- tors forced the main gate of St. Joseph's School but were pre- vented by police from entering the building. In Jaffa, some 150 Yeshiva students marched into the missionary school bearing posters and singing religious songs. The demonstrators, how- ever, offered no resistance when police ejected them from the premises. In Haifa, some 50 re- ligious youths pushed their way into the Bat El School and smashed the office. The school's principal complained that the rioters also roughed up the in- stitution's physician. Police arrested more than 100 demonstrators i n Jerusalem, seven in Jaffa and nine in Haifa. All those arrested were released on bond. Among those detained were many foreign nationals, in- cluding a number of Americans.
