Children's Parents'
Identity Disallowed
by Adoption Laws

BY HENRY LEONARD

Sincerest Best Wishes to All
On the Dawn of a New Year

Adopting children is a very
old practice. The Nazu tablets
of the Amarna period, which
corresponds to the age of Pa-
triarchs Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob, contain many descrip-
tions of the fact that childless
couples would often adopt an
heir. It is claimed that Abra-
ham adopted Eliezer, his serv-
ant, when he had no children.
The Talmud has written that
whoever raises a child is con-
sidered the same as if he had
given birth to the child. What
must be clearly understood is
the fact that Jewish tradition
never allowed the identity of
the natural parents of a child to
be obliterated. This data must
always be a matter of record
so as to keep the facts straight
for the benefit of all concerned.
Adoption per se is thus not only
permissible, but commendable,
provided the natural origin of
the child is not falsified, but
kept on permanent record. It is
wise to consult a rabbi in the
case of adoptions, because there
are many implications which
can be taken care of and should
be taken care of, to protect the
child and the adopting parents.

The term "Tzitzith" which re-
fers to the fringes of the Talith,
or the special four-cornered un-
der-garment to which these
fringes are attached, has a most
interesting derivation. It is
claimed that it comes from a
root which signifies something
that is bright, fresh or bloom-
ing. (Isaiah 40:6). The Book of
Exodus uses this term when re-
ferring to the shining gold plate
worn by the High Priest on his
forehead (Exodus 28:36). From
this it has been said that the
fringes are a symbol of our
faith in the Almighty, which is
a "shining" inspiration, a
"blooming" belief, etc. Jeremaih
has used this term to repre-
sent a wing (Jeremiah 48:19).
On the basis of this, the "Tzit- -
zith" are considered like wings
to raise us to higher status.
Ezekiel uses this term to de-
scribe a lock of hair (Ezekiel
8:3). In this sense, it might seem
to be an extension of one's
self, or a source of protection,
even perhaps a source of dec-
oration and beauty for the soul. r.
