Caviar King Ura Fridman Broke -
Red Monopoly of World Market

Some people dream of being
king. But who could envision
himself with the title of "Caviar
King of the Western Hemi-
sphere?" There is one such man,
an ex-Polish cavalry officer
named Ura F. Fridman, who
bears this label with pride.
Fridman came to the United
States in 1952 from Israel, where
he had lived since the end of
the War. He began working for
a caviar importing business
owned by one of his relatives.
For generations Fridman's fam-
ily had been in the trade.
At the beginning of his career,
Fridman found himself in com-
petition with the Soviet Union.
The fact that the Russians had
control of the world market in
sturgeon roe didn't discourage
or intimidate him. Fridman or-
ganized his own companies, the
Tiya Caviar Company and the
Beluga Caviar Corporation. He
flew to Iran, on the Caspian
Sea, the source of true caviar,
and convinced the government
to give him a contract for the
Western Hemisphere and parts
of the Orient. With the financial
help of the A. J. Armstrong Co.,
Inc., chairman, Jacob Seiler,
Fridman cemented the contract
with the Iranians.

Today Fridman has increased
his imports of caviar to an ex-
p e c t e d 65 tons, retailing at

about $5 million a year.
The saga of the man who
broke the Russian caviar monop-
oly is related by Philip Shabe-
coff in the New York Times.
