Jewish Comm-limit y Council Adopts More Complete• Calendar Format Dr. Samuel Krohn, chairman of the Internal Relations Com- mittee of the Jewish Community Council, announced that publi- cation of the Council's Calendar of Community Events will re- sume for the season on Sept. 20. The calendar is a bi-weekly listing of organizational events. It has been maintained by De- troit's Community Council for the past 20 years in order to reduce friction in the schedul- ing of affairs by community organizations. Dr. Krohn's announcement noted that the calendar will assume a new format this sea son. Program, educational and fund-raising events of commu- nity interest will be listed in detail. Routine membership and board meetings will be an- nounced by date only. Organizations are urged by the Community Council to con- tinue listing dates for all events with the Council Calendar Sec- retary at WO 2-6710. This list- ing should include regular board and membership meetings. The scheduling of the information with the Council office will help prevent duplication and will make it possible for the Council to advise organizations of all events scheduled for any par- ticular date. As in past seasons, each cal- endar will cover a three-week period. The forthcoming calen- dar will list major community dates and regular meetings for the period of Sept. 20 to Oct. 11. Dates for Community Council committee meetings were an- nounced by Sidney M. Shevitz, Council president, and Louis Rosenzweig, chairman of the Community Relations Commit- tee. Commencing with Abraham's City of Ur, continuing with the stories of Sarah and Hagar. J o s e p h, Moses, • Ruth, Saul, David, Jezebel, Isaiah, Esther and Nehemiah, and events and places related to all of them, the author concludes with an inter- esting chapter, "The Heritage." In the latter chapter she tells that "to the Hebrew people, their faith was a joyous thing." Yet, most surprisingly, her con- clusion is that generations have prayed for the advent of a Messiah, and her last words are that a humble young Jew stood up to read Isaiah's words and: "Thus did Jesus reveal the nature of his destiny." Since her evaluations are real- istic in the main, her final chap- ter including ably defined expla- nations of the Sabbath and the Jewish festivals, one must won- der why the Christological aproach. A study of the Old Testiment can, as Jewish readers hope it should, be a thing unto itself. When it steps into a role that sounds like a missionary approach, the appeal to Jewish readers is lost. The Kellner book contains many fine commentaries, it has many maps and good illustra- tions. The partisanship at the end is regrettable. Something New .. .
